Job summary

Alberta Health Services in Calgary is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join the Level II NICU at Peter Lougheed Centre. You will work in a multidisciplinary team to provide neonate and family-centered care, with rounds, assessments, and procedures in a fast-paced environment.

The role requires LPN licensure in Alberta, BCLS-HCP, and recent NICU exposure; shift patterns include days, nights, and weekends for 0.80 FTE Regular Part Time. Calgary location.

Job description

An exciting opportunity exists for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary neonatal team in the delivery of care to neonates and their families in a level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Peter Lougheed centre (PLC) in Calgary, Alberta. PLC supports a wide variety of patients throughout the city of Calgary and surrounding areas. Neonatal nursing is a subspecialty of nursing that works with critically ill newborn infants born with a variety of issues ranging from prematurity, birth defects, infection, cardiac malformations and surgical. Caring for the youngest and smallest of patients, attention to detail and critical thinking are essential to the neonatal nurse’s role. A high level of competency and proficiency is also required to work within this highly technical area. Nurses should be able to evaluate challenging situations and make quick judgments in a fast-paced environment based based on the fluctuating health status of NICU patients. Additionally, they need to be able to maintain a level-head when faced with ethical and emotional situations, and care for families with an empathetic understanding of their situation.

Required Qualifications:

Additional Required Qualifications:

Recent experience (in the past year) in medical/surgical inpatients at an acute care urban site. Must work to full scope of practice including but not limited to IV initiation certification required. Must be able to perform repetitive physical duties that include walking long distances, pushing, pulling, bending, and reaching, assisting with patient transfers and other duties related to patient care. Must convey and demonstrate AHS’ core values.

Preferred Qualifications:

Recent experience (in past year) in NICU at an acute care urban site. Final focus NICU students will be considered. Completion of the post-LPN NICU course required or currently enrolled in NICU orientation. Recent (within last year) experience with care and assessment of the newborn. Current NRP 1-9 preferred. Preceptor/mentorship experience preferred. Critical care experience preferred. Proficiency with adult/peds inpatients Connect Care preferred. Completion of AHS Breast feeding modules.
