The Position

Are you interested in making a positive impact on your community by assisting the Ontario City Library to create and support lifelong reading, learning, and enjoyment? The Ontario City Library is seeking confident, professional, team-oriented individuals interested in gaining valuable experience working in a municipal library. The Library Assistant is responsible for assisting in reference services and supporting a variety of library programs in a particular section of the library. The Library Assistant classification is used throughout the Ontario City Library in a variety of assignments. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication, organizational, and time management skills, as well as excellent customer service skills and be willing to work a flexible schedule to accomplish the department's goals and objectives. The Library Assistant will be expected to exercise sound judgment and establish and maintain good relationships with other library units, city agencies, school districts, and community members.

The successful candidate will embody the Department's mission and vision as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the principles of the City's Customer Service Philosophy – Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving.

The Library Assistant is a paid, part-time/temporary position scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans.

Examples Of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Library Assistant (Part-Time) include the following:

  • Plans, prepares, coordinates and presents a variety of library programs, tours, and outreach.
  • Performs reference work in various sections of the library.
  • Assists patrons in library makerspaces.
  • Performs original cataloging and copy cataloging of library materials.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of reports; monitors funds for assigned programming and collection development.
  • May oversee the work of subordinate employees and volunteers.
  • Creates publicity materials including flyers, posters and brochures; formulates copy/text for service, program and event promotion.
  • Formulates copy/text for promotional materials for the Library.
  • Under supervision, recommends library materials for purchase.
  • Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualification Guidelines

Education

Associate's degree or equivalent education in a related field.

Experience

One year of library experience. Possession of a Master of Library and Information Science and six months of relevant customer service experience may substitute for required library experience.

Desirable

Bachelor's degree in a related field. Previous customer service experience.

Previous experience working with children, teens, and/or collection development.

Ability to speak Spanish and/or Mandarin.

License

Valid California Class 'C' driver's license and an acceptable driving record at time of hire and throughout employment.

Special Requirements

Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.
