Job summary

The City of Winnipeg is seeking a Legal Assistant 2 to provide legal administrative support to assigned solicitor(s) under the Legal Administrative Services Manager. The role involves drafting and assembling legal documents, routine communications, and handling large volumes of files.

Reporting to the manager, you will work with a solicitor and a Legal Assistant 3 to ensure duties are performed accurately within a hybrid work arrangement at the designated location.

Qualifications

  • Legal Assistant Certificate or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Significant related experience in a legal setting (real estate, land development, and municipal law).
  • Ability to work with independence, great attention to detail and sound judgement.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, legal terminology, and processes.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records/files per policies.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage concurrent tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work with officials, solicitors, department heads, and staff.
  • Strong verbal and written communication to convey information to multiple levels.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with tact and integrity.
  • Foreign credentials require official Canadian assessment.

Job Profile

Reporting to the Legal Administrative Services Manager, under direction of a solicitor and assistance of a Legal Assistant 3, the Legal Assistant 2 provides legal administrative support to assigned solicitor(s) on routine and diverse assignments and correspondence, and on complex files with assistance/direction. This includes drafting and assembling a variety of legal documents, routine communication with internal and external stakeholders, file intake and management, and assist with scheduling appointments / meetings if required. The position is required to handle a large volume of files.

Your Education And Qualifications Include
  • Legal Assistant Certificate from a recognized institution. May consider equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Significant related experience working in a legal setting in real estate, land development and/or municipal law.
  • Ability to work under a moderate degree of independence with great attention to detail and with sound judgement and decision making.
  • Thorough knowledge of required policies and procedures, and legal terminology and processes.
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate records and files in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize workloads, and manage concurrent assignments with meeting strict, legislated deadlines.
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, outside solicitors/lawyers, department heads, City staff.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate information through various methods to multiple levels of the organization, stakeholders and the public.
  • Ability to handle confidential and politically sensitive matters with tact, diplomacy and integrity.
