Job description

Leaf Truck Operators

3 Temporary Full-Time Positions - 3 Months

District of Saanich is committed to delivering reliable municipal services that keep our community clean, safe, and well cared for. Public Works - Solid Waste Services plays an important role in maintaining neighbourhood environments through practical, responsive, and resident-focused service delivery.

The District is seeking a safety-conscious, customer-service-oriented Leaf Truck Operators to support Saanich's annual leaf collection program. This seasonal assignment is well suited to experienced commercial vehicle operators who enjoy working outdoors, coordinating a field crew, and providing helpful information to residents.

As a Leaf Truck Operator, you will safely operate and maintain tandem-axle leaf collection trucks while working closely with assigned labourers and traffic-control personnel. You will coordinate daily field activities, collect leaves from streets throughout Saanich, transport and unload material at designated farms, parks, or other drop-off locations, and assist with traffic control, raking, or operating the vacuum hose when required. You will complete pre-trip inspections and related forms; conduct regular equipment maintenance; monitor fuel, oil, and other fluid levels; keep vehicles clean; and report maintenance or service needs to the Fleet Centre. You will also support positive public interactions by educating residents about the leaf collection program and appropriate leaf placement, and by working with the Operations Coordinator - Solid Waste Services to address concerns.

Requirements include Grade 12 graduation or an equivalent; one year of previous related experience; and training and the demonstrated ability to safely operate and maintain leaf collection equipment or similar commercial vehicles. A valid Class 3 B.C. Driver's Licence with air brake endorsement and annual renewal of a Driver's Abstract are required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

The successful candidates will work Monday to Friday, 6:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., from October 19, 2026 to January 15, 2027. This work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, with periodic exposure to noise and dust, and requires sufficient health, physical conditioning, strength, stamina, and coordination to perform the work safely. As a component of the selection process, testing will be conducted. Although we thank all applicants for applying, only those under consideration will be contacted.

This is a C.U.P.E. Local 2011 position with a wage of $39.52 per hour (2026 rate) plus 15% in lieu of benefits. Job description and competition information can be found at www.saanich.ca
