Leadership Management Trainee - Engineering

Purpose of the Position

The Leadership Management Trainee Engineering (LMT-E) program ensures that new trainees develop leadership, industry knowledge, and technical skills to succeed as production supervisors. This intensive seven-month program includes classroom instruction, online training, workshops, projects, and on-the-job training, including an 11-week manager conductor training course and a 16-week engineering management training focused on overseeing safe operations, capital projects, and infrastructure improvements. Upon completion, trainees are placed as production supervisors within CPKC’s network.

Position Responsibilities

  • Learn and utilize railroad operating systems, applications, and local plans to manage engineering teams effectively.
  • Lead safety initiatives through active observations, rule compliance discussions, and preventative measures.
  • Demonstrate leadership capacity to effectively lead engineering employees.
  • Exhibit core leadership competencies: results-driven, inspirational, thoughtful, and exemplary.
  • Prioritize work with urgency, making decisions aligned with CPKC’s values and foundational principles.
  • Complete and pass management train conductor certification, with deployment upon qualification; failure results in removal from the program.
  • Successfully complete all program phases, evaluations, and assignments within deadlines.

Position Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary technical education preferred.
  • 1-2 years supervisory experience in relevant industries preferred.
  • Railway experience in track maintenance or machine operation is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel and relocate across the CPKC network.
  • Availability to work 24/7 shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Strong communication skills, leadership presence, and adaptability.

Additional Information

The training primarily occurs in Calgary, Alberta, with field training across various locations. Candidates must pass pre-employment medical and drug tests, background checks, and obtain necessary certifications, including management conductor certification.
