Job summary

GFL Environmental is actively seeking a Lead Heavy Duty Mechanic to join our Grande Prairie, AB team. We offer industry-leading wages at $60/hour, with an employer-paid benefits program and a retention bonus.

You will diagnose and repair diesel and CNG engines, perform PMs, and maintain records to ensure safety and reliability. As a senior technician, you will mentor apprentices, review work plans, and uphold safety standards while keeping tools and shop equipment in optimal condition.

Qualifications

• Journeyman designation is required.
• Valid Driver’s License is required.
• Provide own tools or willingness to acquire.
• Red Seal preferred, leadership experience a plus.
• Must be willing to use diagnostic software.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair complex CNG and diesel engines and electrical/hydraulic systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspections.
• Maintain accurate repair records and times.
• Review, plan and schedule work; mentor apprentices.
• Ensure safe use of shop equipment and maintain a clean work area.

Our Licensed Mechanics safely operate, repair, and maintain GFL Environmental owned commercial diesel and alternative fuel trucks, and heavy equipment to ensure its ability to operate safely.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair complex, modern CNG and diesel engines, and advanced electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Perform repairs and preventive maintenance tasks such as PM and safety inspections.
• Complete required record keeping associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
• Review, plan and schedule work as required.
• Mentor apprentice technicians and provide training to complete their apprenticeship program.
• Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to company safety procedures.
• Ensure shop equipment and tools are kept in a safe operating condition.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with company safety standards.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Journeyman designation
• Valid Driver’s License
• Provide own tools and willingness to acquire tools as required for jobs.
• Red Seal is preferred but not required.
• Preference will be given to Red Seal Mechanics with leadership experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to perform CVIP inspections, and familiarity with transportation regulation.
• Knowledge of tools required to perform repairs and maintenance on commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Ability to follow schedules, instructions, technical manuals and maintenance guidelines, and other procedures associated with the maintenance of company fleet assets.
• Experience using diagnostic software is preferred.
• Must be computer literate and willing and able to be trained in software systems.
• Ability to communicate effectively across various levels of the organization and communicate with customers and external vendors.
• Ability to be a self-starter capable of working effectively in a team environment or as an individual contributor.
• Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Working Conditions

The Technician must be able to work inside and/or outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat.

Physical Demands

• Physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, grasping/gripping, and pushing/pulling.
• Work utilizing personal protective equipment, including hearing protection, safety-toed boot, utility gloves, reflective vest, hearing and eye protection, hard hat, etc.
• Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts.
• Physically able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, and push/pull up to 100 pounds.
