Job summary

GFL Environmental is seeking a Licensed Heavy Duty Technician in Calgary, AB to operate, repair, and maintain diesel and alternative fuel trucks and heavy equipment. The role covers complex diagnostics, PMs, safety inspections, and documentation of repairs. Must be able to mentor apprentices and adhere to safety standards.

The position is afternoon shift, Monday to Thursday 1:30pm-10pm and Friday 11am-7:30pm, with competitive wages and a commitment to growth opportunities within the company.

Qualifications

  • Journeyman designation or equivalent is required or preferred
  • Valid Driver’s License is required
  • Red Seal is preferred but not required
  • Experience with CVIP inspections and familiarity with vehicle maintenance procedures

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair complex engines (CNG/diesel) and electrical/hydraulic systems
  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance including PMs and safety inspections
  • Document parts usage, repair times, and service records accurately
  • Review, plan, and schedule work as required to maintain fleet uptime
  • Mentor apprentices and support their progression through training
  • Operate shop tools and equipment following safety procedures
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with company standards
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and other duties as assigned

Job description

GFL Environmental is looking for a Licensed Heavy Duty Technician to join our team in Calgary, AB! Our Licensed Technicians safely operate, repair, and maintain GFL Environmental owned commercial diesel and alternative fuel trucks, and heavy equipment to ensure its ability to operate safely. This is an afternoon shift position working Monday to Thursday, 1:30pm-10pm, Friday 11am-7:30pm. Now paying industry leading wages! Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair complex, modern CNG and diesel engines, and advanced electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance tasks such as PM and safety inspections.
  • Complete required record keeping associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
  • Review, plan and schedule work as required.
  • Mentor apprentice technicians and provide training to complete their apprenticeship program.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to company safety procedures.
  • Ensure shop equipment and tools are kept in a safe operating condition.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with company safety standards.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Journeyman designation or equivalent

  • Provide own tools and willingness to acquire tools as required for jobs.
  • Red Seal is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to perform CVIP inspections, and familiarity with transportation regulation.
  • Knowledge of tools required to perform repairs and maintenance on commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to follow schedules, instructions, technical manuals and maintenance guidelines, and other procedures associated with the maintenance of company fleet assets.
  • Experience using diagnostic software is preferred.
  • Must be computer literate and willing and able to be trained in software systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across various levels of the organization and communicate with customers and external vendors.
  • Ability to be a self-starter capable of working effectively in a team environment or as an individual contributor.
  • Excellent attention to detail, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
