Job summary

GFL Environmental in Coquitlam, BC seeks a Lead Heavy Duty Mechanic to join our team. You will diagnose and repair complex diesel/CNG engines, electrical and hydraulic systems, and perform preventive maintenance on a modern fleet.

You will mentor apprentices, plan and schedule work, and ensure safety and quality standards across the shop. Ownership of tools and strong diagnostic skills are required for success in this role.

Qualifications

• Journeyman designation or Red Seal is preferred for lead mechanics.
• Own your tools and stay prepared to acquire required tools.
• Proven ability to diagnose modern diesel/CNG engines and electrical systems.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair complex diesel/CNG engines and hydraulic/electrical systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspections.
• Maintain repair records including parts usage and times.
• Plan, schedule and coordinate work with team leads.
• Mentor apprentice technicians and oversee training.

Our Licensed Mechanics safely operate, repair, and maintain GFL Environmental owned commercial diesel and alternative fuel trucks, and heavy equipment to ensure its ability to operate safely. Provide daily functional direction to mechanics as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair complex, modern CNG and diesel engines, and advanced electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Perform repairs and preventive maintenance tasks such as PM and safety inspections.
• Complete required record-keeping associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
• Review, plan and schedule work as required.
• Mentor apprentice technicians and provide training to complete their apprenticeship program.
• Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to company safety procedures.
• Ensure shop equipment and tools are kept in a safe operating condition.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with company safety standards.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Journeyman designation
• Valid Driver’s License
• Provide your own tools and willingness to acquire tools as required for jobs.
• Red Seal is preferred.
• Preference will be given to Red Seal Mechanics with leadership experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to perform CVIP inspections, and familiarity with transportation regulation.
• Knowledge of tools required to perform repairs and maintenance on commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Ability to follow schedules, instructions, technical manuals and maintenance guidelines, and other procedures associated with the maintenance of company fleet assets.
• Experience using diagnostic software. Must be computer literate and willing and able to be trained in software systems.
• Ability to communicate effectively across various levels of the organization and communicate with customers and external vendors.
• Ability to be a self-starter capable of working effectively in a team environment or as an individual contributor.
• Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
