Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. in Victoria, BC, seeks a Lead Commercial Transport Mechanic to join our team. You will diagnose and repair modern diesel and CNG engines, perform preventive maintenance, mentor apprentices, and help ensure safe, reliable fleet operations.

Requires Journeyman designation and a valid driver’s license; bring your own tools. Red Seal is preferred but not required; leadership experience is advantageous for progression.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair complex CVNG and diesel engines, and advanced electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Perform repairs and preventive maintenance tasks such as PM and safety inspections.
• Complete required record-keeping associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
• Review, plan and schedule work as required.
• Mentor apprentice technicians and provide training to complete their apprenticeship program.
• Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to company safety procedures.
• Ensure shop equipment and tools are kept in a safe operating condition.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with company safety standards.

Our Licensed Mechanics safely operate, repair, and maintain GFL Environmental owned commercial diesel and alternative fuel trucks, and heavy equipment to ensure its ability to operate safely.

Key Responsibilities:

• Diagnose and repair complex, modern CNG and diesel engines, and advanced electrical and hydraulic systems.

Requirements:

• Journeyman designation
• Valid Driver’s License
• Provide own tools and willingness to acquire tools as required for jobs.
• Red Seal is preferred but not required.
• Preference will be given to Red Seal Mechanics with leadership experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to perform CVIP inspections, and familiarity with transportation regulation.
• Knowledge of tools required to perform repairs and maintenance on commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Ability to follow schedules, instructions, technical manuals and maintenance guidelines, and other procedures associated with the maintenance of company fleet assets.
• Experience using diagnostic software. Must be computer literate and willing and able to be trained in software systems.
• Ability to communicate effectively across various levels of the organization and communicate with customers and external vendors.
• Ability to be a self-starter capable of working effectively in a team environment or as an individual contributor.
• Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Working Conditions:

The Technician must be able to work inside and/or outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

• Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, grasping/gripping, and pushing/pulling.
• Work utilizing personal protective equipment, including hearing protection, safety-toed boot, utility gloves, reflective vest, hearing and eye protection, hard hat, etc.
• Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts.
• Physically able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, and push/pull up to 100 pounds.
