Job summary

Lumber Sales Ltd. in Calgary, AB, seeks a hands-on shift lead to supervise daily production targets, guide the team on each shift, and ensure safe operations on the shop floor.

You will review pre-shift targets, set up equipment, assign crews to operate equipment like rip saw, monitor quality and safety, coordinate materials flow, and direct post-shift cleanup.

Industry Lumber Wholesale & Remanufacturing

Primary Function:

Hands on working shift lead contributing and overseeing the daily production targets while leading the team on each shift.

Pre-Shift:

• Reviews the daily production target as communicated by the
• Understands the pre-shift inventory. Monitors the input of materials as well as output.
• Sets up and adjusts equipment in preparation for shift.
• Creates a marshalling area for the production shift. An area in which materials are stored and ready for the next phase of the production process.

During Shift:

• Communicates work plan to shift team.
• Assigns work crews to operate equipment (i.e., rip saw), process raw materials as well as specialized tasks such stacking and banding.
• Observes and checks the work of the production and warehousing employees to ensure operating procedures and safety standards are met.
• Monitors all components of the production and warehouse processes to identify potential problems and take preventive actions.
• Re-assigns workers based on production requirements, experience and job preference.
• Once a work order is complete, sets up a new workstation and assigns production team to the next required work.
• Uses forklift to deliver materials to the production stations and stores completed products to the designated area.

Post Shift:

• Direct the clean-up of the production floor in preparation for the next shift.
• Balances the input and output of materials.

Skills:

• Mechanical aptitude required to trouble shoot.
• Maintain forklift according to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule.
• Strong organizational, supervisory and communication skills.
• Adaptability and flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment.

Working Conditions:
