Job description

Purpose

As a Lead Electrical Designer, you will provide technical and design leadership for electrical design activities across small to medium-sized projects and work packages. You will be responsible for the quality, consistency, and timely delivery of electrical design deliverables, while coordinating closely with Electrical Engineers, other discipline designers, project leadership, and clients. This role balances hands‑on technical design expertise with day‑to‑day leadership, mentoring, and coordination of a small design team.

The Lead Electrical Designer is a key contributor to safe, constructible, and cost-effective electrical designs in support of multidisciplinary engineering projects across the energy, chemicals, mining, and infrastructure sectors.

Key Responsibilities
Technical & Design Leadership
  • Lead the development and delivery of electrical design deliverables, including:
    • Electrical layouts, routing, and installation drawings
    • Cable tray and conduit layouts
    • Equipment location plans
    • Lighting, grounding, and earthing layouts
    • Hazardous area layouts (as applicable)
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight to Electrical Designers and Design Technologists.
  • Review and check design deliverables for quality, constructability, and compliance with project standards, codes, and specifications.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards (e.g., CSA, NEC, IEC, client standards, and project-specific requirements).
  • Support Electrical Engineers with the interpretation and implementation of design requirements into detailed design drawings and models.
Project & Team Leadership
  • Lead a small team of Electrical Designers and coordinate daily design activities and priorities.
  • Plan and assign work, monitor progress against schedule and budget, and proactively identify and resolve resourcing or delivery risks.
  • Act as the primary design point of contact for the electrical discipline on assigned projects or work packages.
  • Participate in project planning, design reviews, model reviews, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
  • Interface with construction, procurement, and commissioning teams to support constructability and execution planning.
Coordination & Collaboration
  • Coordinate closely with other discipline leads and designers (piping, civil/structural, mechanical, instrumentation, and process) to ensure integrated, clash‑free designs.
  • Support 3D model coordination and interdisciplinary design reviews.
  • Incorporate client feedback and manage design changes in accordance with project change management processes.
Quality, Safety & Continuous Improvement
  • Promote a strong safety culture in design, including consideration of safe access, maintenance, and constructability.
  • Support continuous improvement of design standards, tools, templates, and workflows within the Electrical discipline.
  • Contribute to the development and mentoring of junior designers through coaching and technical guidance.
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Training
  • Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Design, or a related discipline.
Experience
  • Extensive experience in electrical design within engineering, EPC/EPCM, or industrial project environments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading small to medium-sized electrical design teams or acting as a discipline design lead on projects.
  • Strong experience delivering electrical design for industrial facilities such as oil & gas, chemicals, mining, power, or infrastructure projects.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design tools and platforms (e.g., AutoCAD, SmartPlant, AVEVA E3D, Revit, or similar 3D design tools).
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems layout and installation, including cable management systems, grounding/earthing, lighting, and equipment layouts.
  • Familiarity with relevant electrical codes, standards, and best practices (CSA, NEC, IEC, client standards).
  • Strong ability to interpret engineering documentation, datasheets, specifications, and vendor drawings.
Leadership & Interpersonal Skills
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and coordinate the work of designers within a project environment.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines and with project leadership and clients.
  • Well-organized, proactive, and capable of managing competing priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
