About the Radio-Canada.ca Core Team:
The Radio-Canada.ca Core Team is dedicated to enhancing the health, quality and stability of our front-office systems. We standardize development practices, provide support for system monitoring and optimization (working closely with other teams), manage orphaned back-end systems and implement essential tools and practices for all our product development teams. We’re also responsible for the ongoing evolution and maintenance of our digital advertising systems.
Why is this role important?
Your role as Lead Developer is to guide a cross-functional team of developers, helping them develop, maintain and evolve projects.
More specifically, you will review and assess needs while encouraging the team to determine requirements and maintain development standards. You will be asked to co-ordinate, support and participate in the team’s technical foundation work. You will provide the development team with leadership to ensure cohesion and a steady pace of development. You also know that delegating tasks and identifying your team’s skills is essential to achieving team objectives in a healthy way. You will need to be a good listener, a good teacher, diplomatic and psychologically astute on a daily basis.
Your proven track record in development will enable you to fulfil your role using the appropriate technology and leveraging industry best practices. You will guide and oversee development focused on producing, enhancing or maintaining back-end and front-end apps. You will also ensure and plan the go-live of these apps.
Drawing on your excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you will train and support the development team in their efforts to evolve back-end and front-end apps. You will also be required to help recruit and mentor team members with a view to upgrading their skills.

How you will make an impact:
Assisting with project analysis, evaluation and planning.
Planning and prioritizing development tasks in conjunction with the project manager.
Assisting with implementation and ensuring your team’s compliance with established development standards.
Acting as a mentor to developers on your team.
Providing strong leadership to the technical team.
Keeping your team informed of project status updates and changes.
Discussing potential human and technical challenges, and suggesting solutions to those challenges.
Staying current on industry best practices for development and documentation.
Proactively seeking ways to improve team workflows.
Sharing knowledge in your field of expertise.
Promoting best practices and ensuring appropriate knowledge transfer to the team.
Ensuring the smooth operation of all projects under your purview, from initial analysis to final rollout.
Participating in code reviews to help the team evolve and maintain high standards for code quality and robustness.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
Experience or interest in managing a development team.
Extensive experience with back-end and front-end development.
Proficient knowledge of object-oriented and functional development.
Proficient knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript/CSS.
Proficient knowledge of React/Redux/Saga.
Knowledge of the digital advertising space (Google Ads).
Familiarity with NodeJS.
Knowledge of MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch and Azure Services.
Knowledge of GraphQL.
Knowledge of web accessibility standards.
Ability to make complex technical concepts understandable to non-experts.
Ability to work well in a team, communicate effectively and be diplomatic.
Ability to advocate for technical approaches.
Ability to recommend relevant solutions to technical challenges that arise.
Keen interest in major web trends and issues.
Interest in and openness to emerging technologies.
Excellent stress management and prioritization skills.
Excellent judgment and initiative.
Analytical and conceptual mind.
Critical mind, diligence, self-management skills and resourcefulness.
Solid command of French.
Working knowledge of spoken and written English.
Please note this is a 12-month contract position, renewable annually. This regular position is not a consulting assignment but a long-term opportunity with attractive CBC/Radio-Canada employee benefits.
