Position Overview

The Lead Aircraft De-icer, reporting to the Deicing Operations Manager, will work as part of a team to provide superior service and stakeholder satisfaction through responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of equipment utilized for the purpose of tasks related to de-icing aircraft while ensuring the well-being of self and all internal and external stakeholders. The Lead Aircraft De-icer provides leadership, technical support and fosters growth and development based on Inland’s values, while providing excellent customer service.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities (Including But Not Limited To)

• Proactively foster a learning safety culture by modeling a safe work ethic and promoting the value of open reporting and shared safety responsibility. Follow all safety policies, standards, and procedures in order to achieve a safe and healthy work environment for all staff, customers, and visitors. Similarly support Inland’s environmental commitments by helping to limit our organization’s impact on the ecosystem;
• Ensure that Inland is following all Government Labour, Health and Safety laws, regulations and policies;
• Abide by Inland’s procedural handbooks, operational plans, and directives of management to ensure that all work is done according to specifications and/or regulations;
• Ensure that fellow employees follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and they are in compliance with environmental laws, guidelines and reporting;
• Assist the station management team with the responsibilities of the overall safety and performance of the de-icing operation;
• Train, assign, and assess work of Aircraft De-icer’s;
• Provide daily shift briefings to Aircraft De-icer’s and report all information about shifts to Management on duty;
• Uphold and follow the duties related to de/anti-icing aircraft according to procedures for both airlines and Inland/ IDS (including inspecting aircraft for frozen contamination);
• Participate in pre-planning for de/anti-icing events by performing checks on equipment and servicing equipment with fuel or glycol;
• Operate equipment within close proximity to airfield personnel, aircraft and other airfield equipment safely and efficiently;
• Be alert and aware of other apron traffic, and to only begin de-icing when it can be done safely without interfering with aircraft movement;
• Promptly and accurately complete all associated paperwork as required;
• Professionally communicate with aircraft operators (pilots), spraying operators, GRV operators, and other stakeholders in a clear and concise manner via two-way radio;
• Ensure proper shutdown of pads, including paperwork and log books; that all maintenance issues have been logged and reported to maintenance and all proper shutdown procedures for the equipment are followed;
• Testing of aircraft de-icing fluids as required;
• Perform daily Vehicle walk-around inspections utilizing appropriate checklists;
• Perform and record light maintenance tasks on Vehicles and Equipment, and immediately report any repair requirements;
• Promote the best interest of the company by fostering goodwill and support between IDS and its customers ensuring that Inland’s policy of superior service and satisfaction are met;
• Understand and promote the Company’s mission statement, values and strategic goals;
• Understand and adhere to Company standards, policies, procedures and practices;
• Foster a team environment and create a “group culture”;
• Drive and maintain a high level of efficiency and productivity;
• To accomplish any other tasks that may, from time to time, be assigned by management.

Required Skills And Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent;
• Minimum 18 years of age;
• Previous supervisory experience considered an asset;
• Successful completion of all classroom and on-the-job training;
• Basic computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft programs and the ability to use Inland’s independent computer program “Ice Link – Aircraft Ground De-icing Management System”;
• The ability to use an iPad and/or laptop;
• Ability to read, write, speak and communicate effectively;
• Ability to interpret documents including safety rules, operating and procedure manuals;
• Basic knowledge of aircraft and how they perform;
• General mechanical competence and ability to effectively use hand tools;
• Ability to work as part of a team;
• Ability to maintain a positive and good-natured attitude;
• Flexible schedule;
• Must be comfortable working at various heights;
• Must be comfortable operating large vehicles during inclement weather in constricted areas;
• Ability to remain calm and perform under pressure and within fixed time constraints.

Certifications/Licenses

• Hold and maintain a Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets company insurance standards;
• Hold and maintain a Restricted Area Identify Card (RAIC);
• Hold and maintain a Valid Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP) and an Industry Canada Radio License;
• Class 3 Driver’s License considered an asset.

Work Environment

The Lead Aircraft De-icer will have a mixture of operational and office duties. While most of the job will be spent on the airfield ensuring that operations goals are being achieved, time will be spent on office tasks. There will be regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions (wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles and vibration). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. There will be times when the Lead Aircraft De-icer will be required to work outside of their normal work schedule, so that we may meet the needs of our customers and/or operational requirements.

Physical Demands

• It is expected that the candidate be physically fit and able to perform all operational requirements;
• Ability to lift, push, and pull objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds regularly;
• Employees must have the ability to climb 15-foot heights for work;
• Position involves standing or sitting for extended periods of time as well as bending, kneeling, lifting, climbing, using hands to control tools and feel objects, reaching with hands and arms;
• Ability to work in a confined space for extended periods of time;
• Work outdoors for long periods when necessary;
• Wearing of personal protective equipment when required and full mobility allowing for freedom of movement in high-risk environment;
• Must be able to speak clearly and hear efficiently in English;
• Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus;
• May be required to move, connect, disconnect hoses and be able to operate industrial valves and perform general labor duties.

Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work

• This is a full-time seasonal hourly position with a minimum of 40 hours per week expected;
• Due to the seasonal nature of our business, and the direct impact of weather on our operation, hours of work are to be flexible with additional hours possibly required during certain weather events.
