ABOUT US

Van Dusen Law is a small, busy Ontario-based litigation boutique located in Russell, Ontario (immediately east of Ottawa). We practice in all areas of civil, commercial, and construction litigation, including insurance-related proceedings and plaintiff personal injury matters.

POSITION

This is a full-time position based in Russell. As a senior Law Clerk / Practice Assistant, you are professional, discreet, self-motivated, and leverage your experience and training to deliver outstanding customer service to clients.

You are highly organized, detail-oriented, able to meet tight deadlines, and comfortable working in a dynamic and collaborative team environment requiring you to multi-task and manage priorities daily.

RESPONSIBILITIES

What are we looking for in a law clerk/practice assistant?

Generally:
  • Excellent computer skills and the capacity to work without paper (we are paperless and use multiple software programs to manage the practice);
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience as a law clerk, paralegal, or executive assistant engaged in civil litigation;
  • Strong written and communication skills (you are proactive in making calls and communicating effectively);
  • Familiarity with Federal and Ontario Courts’ Rules; and
  • Initiative and the ability to work independently, while recognizing when colleagues need assistance and pitching in.
Specific responsibilities include:
  • Electronically compiling, OCRing, bookmarking, and hyperlinking documents (emails, records, briefs, court documents) using Adobe Acrobat;
  • Uploading and organizing documents in Case Center;
  • Serving and filing court documents via the Justice Services Online portal;
  • Organizing and maintaining files, drafting confidential communications, memos, and reports;
  • Managing electronic database information;
  • Communicating with lawyers, clients, and witnesses, managing scheduling and travel arrangements;
  • Drafting legal documents and conducting legal research;
  • Assisting with answering phones and emails;
  • Performing general administrative duties.
Ideal candidate would also have:
  • Experience with electronic customer management systems (CRMs) such as CosmoLex, Clio, or iManage;
  • Expertise with Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Willingness to learn about generative AI platforms;
  • Fluency in English and French, both written and oral.
