F.H. Collins Secondary School in Whitehorse, Yukon, seeks a temporary Learning Assistance Teacher, Literacy, to support English/French Immersion students in grades 8–12.

The role is 1.0 FTE with start ASAP and an end date of June 11, 2027, within the Department of Education. Qualified candidates have a Bachelor of Education with a focus on Special Education or Literacy, knowledge of benchmark assessments and IEPs, and experience fostering inclusive learning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education with a major in Special Education, Literacy, or related field.
  • Post-graduate coursework related to learning disabilities or literacy would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated success facilitating learning opportunities to maximize student potential.
  • Demonstrated success developing and implementing Student Support Plans and/or IEPs.
  • Knowledge of benchmark (diagnostic) assessments.
  • Demonstrated success collaborating with other educators in communication of learning needs and implementation of literacy and learning strategies.
  • Successful teaching in a cross-cultural setting with sensitivity to First Nation students.

F.H.C is a dual-track English/French Immersion school serving approximately 800 students in grades 8 through 12. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Education degree with a major in Special Education, Literacy or related field;
  • Post-graduate coursework related to students with learning disabilities or literacy would be an asset;
  • Demonstrated success facilitating learning opportunities to maximize student potential;
  • Demonstrated success developing and implementing Student Support Plans and/or IEPs;
  • Knowledge or experience in implementing benchmark (diagnostic) assessments;
  • Demonstrated success collaborating with other educators in communication of learning needs and implementation of literacy and learning strategies;
  • Successful teaching in a cross-cultural setting with a knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of First Nation students.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Extensive experience and success working with students with special needs
  • Demonstrated superior planning organizational skills
  • Ability to include and support Educational Assistants in the implementation of Individual Education Plans;
  • A knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of First Nations people of Yukon and a culturally diverse student population
  • Ability to plan and implement appropriate integration of students into the appropriate school environment;
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
