Job summary

Christ the King Elementary School in Whitehorse, Yukon, seeks a Learning Assistant Teacher to support numeracy instruction and manage student educational plans. The role combines direct classroom support with case management and collaboration with the classroom teacher, lasting through June 11, 2027.

The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor of Education or equivalent and have leadership in numeracy, experience creating IEPs/SSPs, and be versed in First Nations perspectives and trauma-informed

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent required.
  • Masters level coursework in numeracy instruction and/or special education is preferred.
  • Leadership experience in numeracy instruction is expected.
  • Experience identifying, implementing, and assessing targeted strength-based numeracy interventions.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and revising IEPs/SSPs.
  • Experience using First Peoples Ways of Knowing, Doing and Being to support students.
  • Training in trauma-responsive educational practices is required.

We are currently seeking a talented learning assistant teacher to join the team at Christ the King Elementary School. Christ the King Elementary School provides a faith-based, Roman Catholic education within the public school system of Yukon Education. Our school sits on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council within the wilderness city of Whitehorse, Yukon. CKES is a K-7 school of approximately 360 students, serving a diverse cultural population. Our educational professionals facilitate academic excellence and model life‑long learning. We assist students in developing a relationship with Jesus and appreciation of self and others. The uniqueness of each child is celebrated. This position is two-fold: A portion of time will be used to support staff with numeracy instruction and assessment. This role also provides case management and support for students who have educational plans. This support will involve a combination of direct instruction, work in classrooms, and collaborating with the student’s teacher. These needs may be academic, medical, behavioural, social-emotional, or a combination of these.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent.
  • Masters’ level coursework in numeracy instruction and/or special education
  • Leadership experience in numeracy instruction

  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work positively and collaboratively with students, staff, and the school community.
  • Experience using and integrating technology as part of teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Willingness to support the school mission statement and participate in all religious activities.
  • An appreciation of the cultural diversity of the Yukon with the ability to incorporate and promote this diversity within the faith life of the school community.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity towards the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations and a culturally diverse student population.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a designated position within the Yukon public service which requires the following condition(s) of employment:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
  • Yukon Teacher Certification; learn about the certification process here
  • Yukon First Nations 101, to be completed at your first opportunity.
  • Class 5 Drivers License or equivalent
