Job description

Grey Barn | Northwest Arkansas

$66,000 Base Salary + Up to $16,000 in Starting Bonus Opportunity

Grey Barn is looking for someone who actually knows landscaping.

Not someone who has simply managed landscaping crews from an office.

We are looking for a person who can walk onto a property and understand what needs to happen – from turf, beds, plants and drainage to design, installation, maintenance processes and crew execution.

You should be equally comfortable:

  • Walking a property with a customer
  • Designing and estimating a landscape project
  • Selling the work
  • Showing a crew exactly how it should be completed
  • Jumping in and demonstrating the right process when necessary
  • Inspecting the finished product
  • Improving the systems so the next job gets done faster and better

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone with deep landscaping experience who wants to help us build a best-in-class commercial landscaping operation.

THE ROLE

The Landscape Production & Design Expert will help Grey Barn improve how we design, sell, install and maintain landscapes across our portfolio.

You will work closely with our operations, sales and field teams to make sure our people understand not only what to do, but how and why it should be done.

This position will have responsibility across three major areas:

1. Landscape Expertise & Design

You should be able to evaluate properties and create practical landscape solutions involving:

  • Landscape renovations
  • Plant and bed design
  • Tree and shrub selection
  • Turf and grass management
  • Mulch and rock installations
  • Drainage improvements
  • Seasonal color
  • Bed cleanup and restoration
  • Property enhancement projects
  • Landscape installation and replacement projects

You do not need to be a landscape architect, but you should have enough experience to confidently recommend solutions and explain them to customers and crews.

2. Sales & Estimating

You will help turn property needs into profitable work.

This includes:

  • Meeting with customers
  • Identifying enhancement opportunities
  • Developing scopes of work
  • Estimating labor, materials and equipment
  • Presenting recommendations
  • Helping close projects
  • Ensuring sold work can actually be produced profitably

You must be comfortable talking to customers and asking for the sale.

3. Production, Training & Quality

This is not a desk-only position.

You will spend significant time working with our crews and leaders in the field.

You will:

  • Train employees on landscaping best practices
  • Create repeatable installation and maintenance processes
  • Demonstrate proper techniques
  • Help crews diagnose landscaping problems
  • Inspect completed work
  • Correct quality issues
  • Develop SOPs and training materials
  • Improve productivity and job costing
  • Help develop crew leaders into stronger landscaping professionals

We want someone who can take years of landscaping knowledge and teach it to other people in a simple, repeatable way.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

You must have:

  • 5+ years of professional landscaping experience
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of landscape maintenance
  • Experience with landscape installation
  • Experience designing or laying out landscape projects
  • Experience estimating landscaping work
  • Experience leading or training landscaping employees
  • Strong understanding of plants, turf, beds and landscape materials
  • Ability to identify common landscape problems and recommend solutions
  • Ability to communicate professionally with commercial customers
  • Comfort selling recommended work
  • Ability to manage several projects or properties at the same time
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Ability to work outdoors and physically participate in landscaping work when necessary
STRONGLY PREFERRED

Experience with any of the following is a major plus:

  • Commercial landscaping
  • Irrigation systems
  • Irrigation troubleshooting and repairs
  • Fertilization
  • Weed control
  • Herbicide and pesticide applications
  • Plant health
  • Drainage
  • Hardscape installation
  • Landscape lighting
  • Estimating software
  • Job costing
  • Managing multiple crews
  • Creating SOPs or training programs

Licenses or certifications related to landscaping, irrigation, horticulture or chemical applications are also a plus.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

A strong person in this role should help us:

  • Improve the quality of our landscaping work
  • Develop better field processes
  • Train stronger crews and crew leaders
  • Reduce callbacks and rework
  • Improve estimating accuracy
  • Increase profitable enhancement sales
  • Build repeatable standards for landscape maintenance and installation
  • Make our field team more knowledgeable and independent
  • Deliver landscapes our customers are excited about
COMPENSATION

Base Salary: $66,000 per year

Starting Bonus Opportunity: Up to $16,000 annually based on agreed performance goals.

Bonus opportunities may be tied to areas such as:

  • Profitable enhancement sales
  • Gross profit performance
  • Production quality
  • Training completion
  • Reduction in callbacks/rework
  • Successful implementation of field processes
  • Team development

There is significant opportunity for this role to grow as Grey Barn grows.

SCHEDULE

This is a full-time, field-oriented leadership position.

Typical schedule:

Monday-Thursday: 6:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Friday: 7:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Some projects, customer needs, weather events or seasonal workloads will require longer days.

Candidates should understand that landscaping is a seasonal operating business and be comfortable doing what is necessary to get the job completed properly.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

This could be a great fit if you are the person other landscapers come to when they don't know how to solve something.

You have spent years learning the trade.

You know what good landscaping looks like.

You can diagnose problems quickly.

You enjoy teaching people.

You are comfortable talking with customers.

And you want an opportunity to use your knowledge to help build a growing landscaping company instead of simply running another mowing route.

If that sounds like you, we want to talk.
