Job summary

Western University in London, Ontario, is seeking a Landscape Operator for a 6-month temporary full-time contract. Multiple vacancies exist. The role supports campus landscape maintenance, construction and repair activities using university vehicles and equipment.

Qualified candidates bring 3+ years in landscape environments, strong safety knowledge, and the ability to work in a team or independently. The position is in-person on campus, with a starting hourly rate of $32.02 as of July 1, 2026.

Qualifications

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of at least one industry related post-secondary course or course through a landscape trade organization
  • Maintain a valid Ontario G Driver’s Licence
  • Maintain a current First Aid Certificate including CPR where required
  • Within the last 10 years: at least 3 years in landscape maintenance including snow/ice management
  • Experience in large, complex environments operating loading and turf maintenance equipment

Responsibilities

The Landscape Operatorperforms labour intensive and skilled work associated with the maintenance, construction, repair, alteration and inspection of campus landscape and facilities utilizing supplied vehicles, equipment and associated tools.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of at least one industry related post-secondary course at an accredited institution or at least one industry related course offered through a landscape industry trade organization relating to the requirements of the role description
  • Maintain, at minimum, a valid Ontario G Driver’s License
  • Maintain a current First Aid Certificate including CPR where required

Experience:

  • Within the last 10 years:
    • At least 3 years continuous experience working within a landscape environment performing summer and winter landscape maintenance/installation including snow and ice management
    • At least 3 years of continuous experience in a large and complex environment such as a commercial, industrial, or institutional setting:
      • Operating loading equipment, such as skid steers and tractors
      • Operating various types of turf maintenance equipment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to landscape services/waste management operations
  • In-depth understanding of tools, equipment, principles, materials, and terminology associated with landscape services/waste management operations
  • Basic understanding of other positions within Facilities Management with which the role interacts with
  • Comprehensive knowledge in the current versions of all applicable legislation, regulations, codes and standards
  • Comprehensive understanding of hydraulic, power take-off (PTO) and mechanically driven implements and attachments
  • Knowledgeable in the operation of landscape vehicles and equipment including battery electric units
  • Ability to investigate, identify, analyze and document information in written or electronic form andresolve problems, as well as organize and order work materials, tools, and support staff in the shop andon the job site
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including to lift and transport materials, bend,excavate, climb and reach repetitively, as well as to work in confined spaces or in areas containingdesignated substances found within OH&S Act as required
  • Ability to work well in a team environment as well as autonomously with minimal supervision, and toperform tasks in emergency situations
  • Ability to interpret and work from electronic/written operation instruction sheets as well asmechanical electrical and geographical drawings/maps and produce quick-sketch working diagrams
  • Comprehensive electronic, oral and written communication skills with ability to listen fully andrespond courteously to instructions, questions and comments
  • Dependable and co-operative disposition with ability to establish a rapport with customers, leadersand peers, as well as to interact with others in positive ways which develop mutual understanding,respect and productive relationships
