Job description

GreenShield is a proudly Canadian, national non-profit health care and insurance organization, driven by our mission of Better Health for All. We believe health care is a right, not a privilege, and we are committed to improving health outcomes, advancing health equity, and building a future where every Canadian can reach their full health and well-being potential.

Through our unique integrated payer-provider ("payvider") model, we offer insurance, administer benefits, and pay claims as a ‘payer’ while offering health care services such as mental health, pharmacy, telemedicine, and chronic disease management as a ‘provider’. As a non-profit social enterprise without shareholders, we reinvest our excess earnings to directly support underserved communities. Through GreenShield Cares, we positively impacted the health and well-being of over one million Canadians between 2020 and 2025. What’s driving us now is the commitment to measurably impact an additional three million Canadians by 2030 – across mental health, essential medicines, and chronic disease management – through scalable initiatives that deliver meaningful change in pursuit of our mission of Better Health for All.

At GreenShield, our culture is where purpose meets passion and performance. Our teams work as one to deliver meaningful, measurable impact for the people and communities we serve.

THE ROLE IN A NUTSHELL

The Labour Relations & Health and Safety Consultant is a key member of the People and Culture team responsible for providing practical, timely, and consistent labour relations and occupational health and safety advice across the organization. Working closely with leaders, employees, union representatives, People and Culture colleagues, Legal, Facilities, and other stakeholders, the Consultant supports the administration of collective agreements, grievance management, workplace investigations, policy interpretation, health and safety programs, compliance activities, and initiatives that promote a respectful, safe, and productive workplace.

  • Provide advice and guidance to leaders and employees on labour relations matters, including collective agreement interpretation, discipline, attendance, performance-related matters, accommodations, workplace changes, and employee relations issues.
  • Support the grievance process by conducting research, preparing documentation, analyzing facts, identifying risks, and recommending resolution strategies in alignment with legislation, the collective agreement, and organizational policy.
  • Participate in grievance meetings, labour-management discussions, workplace investigations, and issue-resolution meetings, ensuring matters are handled fairly, consistently, and in a timely manner.
  • Build and maintain constructive working relationships with union representatives, leaders, employees, and internal partners to support open communication and positive labour relations.
  • Assist with collective bargaining preparation by gathering data, reviewing trends, conducting research, drafting proposals, preparing briefing materials, and supporting implementation of negotiated changes.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to business stakeholders by providing guidance and recommendations on projects, programs, and change initiatives, ensuring labour relations considerations, collective agreement obligations, and employee impacts are identified and addressed.
  • Monitor labour relations trends, grievance themes, workplace issues, and legislative developments, and provide recommendations to improve practices, reduce risk, and support organizational effectiveness.
  • Support the development, review, communication, and consistent application of labour relations, employee relations, and health and safety policies, procedures, standards, and tools.
  • Deliver or support training and education for leaders and employees on collective agreement administration, respectful workplace practices, labour relations processes, health and safety responsibilities, and compliance requirements.
  • Support occupational health and safety programs, including hazard identification, incident reporting, workplace inspections, corrective action follow-up, compliance tracking, and documentation management.
  • Partner with Facilities, business leaders, and certified health and safety representatives to address workplace safety concerns and promote adoption of health and safety best practices.
  • Maintain accurate records related to grievances, investigations, workplace changes, labour relations activity, health and safety matters, and compliance requirements.
  • Prepare reports, dashboards, briefing notes, and recommendations using data and metrics to identify emerging issues, trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Labour Relations, Human Resources, Business Administration, Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of progressive experience in labour relations, employee relations, human resources, occupational health and safety, or a related advisory role.
  • Working knowledge of labour relations legislation, employment standards, occupational health and safety legislation, human rights obligations, and collective agreement administration.
  • Experience supporting grievance management, workplace investigations, policy interpretation, conflict resolution, and labour-management processes.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends, prepare reports, and make practical recommendations.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, consultation, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with leaders, employees, union representatives, and cross-functional partners.
  • Sound judgement, discretion, and professionalism when handling confidential, sensitive, and complex workplace matters.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, maintain accurate records, and
  • follow through on commitments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
