Job summary

University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto General Hospital seeks an Advanced Laboratory Technician for the Clinical Genetics laboratory. The role supports testing, reporting, inventory and quality tasks under a medical directive.

You will work across a fast-paced genetics lab environment with emphasis on safety and patient confidentiality. Qualifications include a Lab Technician Diploma or higher, CSMLS certification, and experience with EPIC/HIS-Beaker.

Qualifications

• Minimum 6 months of practical and related experience in a Clinical Genetics laboratory.
• Certification from CSMLS, MLPAO, or agency recognized by the Ontario Laboratory Licensing Branch.
• Completion of 30 hours of professional continuing education per year.
• Computer literacy in Windows-based applications.
• Experience working in a health care environment.
• Experience with the Epic HIS/Beaker Application.
• Knowledge of genetics and medical terminology (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Perform limited testing/reporting and pre-analytic tasks in assigned areas following safety practices.
• Prepare, handle and dispense tubes/reagents per established procedures.
• Perform report handling, statistics collection, and selected quality responsibilities.
• Provide support for inventory, supply control and receiving.
• Perform other duties in a clinical genetics laboratory as assigned.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to hospital policies.

As an integral member of the Clinical Genetics laboratory team the Technician V (Advanced Laboratory Technician) performs a variety of support functions under a medical directive.

Duties

• Performing limited testing/reporting and pre-analytic tasks in assigned areas using accepted safety practices
• Following established procedures and guidelines; preparing, handling and dispensing tubes/reagents
• Performing report handling, statistics collection, and selected quality responsibilities
• Provide support for inventory, supply control and receiving
• Performing other duties related to a clinical genetics laboratory
• Observing and understanding Hospital and departmental policies and procedures
• Adhering to Hospital and departmental mission and value statements while maintaining patient confidentiality
• Performing cross-functional duties as assigned or requested
• Performing other duties related to and consistent with the job classification, as required

At minimum, completion of high school + additional program 1 year and over in Laboratory Technician, Laboratory Assistant Diploma (or higher MLP) from an accredited institution or completion of the discipline specific degree, or micro credential or recognized equivalent, required

• Minimum 6 months of practical and related experience in a Clinical Genetics laboratory, required
• Certification from CSMLS, MLPAO, or agency recognized by the Laboratory Licensing Branch of the Ministry of Health of the Province of Ontario, required
• Completion of 30 hours of professional continuing education per year, required
• Computer literate in Windows based applications, required
• Experience working in a health care environment, required
• Experience with the Epic HIS/Beaker Application, required
• Very good customer service, interpersonal and telephone skills, preferred
• Good organizational, time management and prioritization skills, preferred
• Good verbal and written communication skills, preferred
