Job summary

AGAT Laboratories in Calgary, Alberta is seeking a diligent laboratory technician to join our analytical team. You will perform basic lab procedures, prepare samples and reagents, and assist with quality control in a fast-paced environment.

The ideal candidate has a post-secondary credential in a technical field, 0–2 years lab experience, and proficiency with Excel. English fluency is required, and the ability to lift 25 pounds and work with solvents is expected.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education with a Technical Diploma or Degree required.
  • 0-2 years previous laboratory experience.
  • Experience using a high precision microbalance for weighing samples is an asset.
  • Chemistry concepts and geochemistry knowledge, including unit conversions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic laboratory procedures including preparation of samples, reagents and calibration solutions.
  • Provide general lab support including washing glassware, cleaning workstations and waste disposal.
  • Meet quality assurance and turn around time specifications.
  • Follow all Quality Control and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you will be doing:
  • Perform basic laboratory procedures including preparation of samples, reagents and calibration solutions
    • Transferring gases from cylinders to sample bags
    • Crushing rocks and sediments
    • Weighing samples on a micro balance
    • Filtering water samples and basic benchtop wet chemistry
    • Working in a fume hood with solvents such as toluene, hexane, etc.
    • Handling sour (H2S) samples (gases, oils, and water)
  • Provide general lab support including washing glassware, cleaning workstations and waste disposal
  • Meet quality assurance and turn around time specifications
  • Follow all Quality Control and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Other duties as assigned
What you bring to the table:
  • Post-secondary education with a Technical Diploma or Degree required.
  • 0-2years previous laboratory experience.
  • Experience using a high precision microbalance for weighing samples is an asset.
  • An understanding of the principlesof chemistry and preferably geochemistry.
    • This could be experience with natural gases, oils, oil industry experience, etc.
    • Unit conversion concepts.
  • Proficiencyusing Microsoft Office programs such as Excel.
  • Mature work ethic, with the ability to work in a positive manner in a fast-paced environment.
  • Problem solving, communication, organization, and time management.
  • Fluency in English, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to lift 25+ pounds on a consistent basis and perform work in a hot environment.
