Job description

Every lab result depends on a system that functions reliably behind the scenes. As a Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) Officer, you’ll shape the digital infrastructure that drives diagnostics. You’ll work closely with technologists, pathologists, and IT teams to ensure timely, accurate, and secure data flow. Your work directly impacts patient care by reducing errors, minimizing disruptions, and ensuring clinical teams receive accurate, reliable results. In this role, you’ll benefit from the continuity, support and resources of a hospital environment - empowering you to develop solutions that make diagnostics more reliable for everyone who depends on them. This opportunity is focused on core laboratory systems designed to support high testing volumes across multiple areas, each operating with specialized equipment and testing platforms.

Is this you?

Are you someone who brings a structured, reliable approach to troubleshooting? You don’t guess or improvise — you follow the evidence, isolate the issue, and resolve it in a way that prevents recurrence. Whether you're addressing LIS configuration mismatches or unexpected system behaviour, you aim for effective solutions. You understand that good troubleshooting protects workflows before they’re disrupted.

You are someone who knows how to communicate highly technical information in a manner that’s accessible. Whether you're supporting a colleague during an LIS update or explaining a workflow to a new user, you're able to guide without being overwhelming. You adapt your communication based on who you're working with — and you always make time for questions. People trust you to explain the “why,” not just the “how.”

If you approach system changes with flexibility and clarity, this role will align with your strengths. You have experience in core lab environments where equipment, interfaces, or priorities evolve frequently. You’re skilled at adjusting quickly while maintaining clear, logical, and well-documented workflows.

About The Pathology And Laboratory Medicine Team

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM) at Mount Sinai Hospital is recognized in Canada as a reference centre of excellence for laboratory services. Our internationally acclaimed professional and technical expertise, combined with advanced technology platforms, has made PLM a global leader in providing quality laboratory services, education, and research. We offer a wide range of diagnostic support to hospitals, medical clinics, and healthcare professionals in the Greater Toronto Area, across Canada, and internationally. PLM performs a wide array of services, including blood tests and specialized tissue analysis.

Our Core Laboratory performs an extensive range of hematology and biochemistry testing, using both automated and manual methods. Working across areas such as transfusion medicine, flow cytometry, immunology, and special biochemistry, the team supports care for diverse patient populations, including oncology, NICU, prenatal, and surgical cases. This is a technically varied environment where diagnostic services intersect with emerging tools, specialty programs, and complex case needs.

In This Role You Will

  • Monitor, maintain and support the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Troubleshoot issues with the LIS applications and connectivity/interfaces with instruments, equipment and other systems, and keep detailed records and documentation
  • Ensure the integrity of the LIS by performing tests and audits on the LIS applications for accurate data mining, generation of reports and data analysis to aid the laboratories in quality assurance and strategic projects related to service delivery
  • Maintain subject matter expertise to build and support the Lab LIS application for Core Laboratory and its configurational and functional dependencies with other modules
  • Support and oversee the designated LIS key ops and/or super users in the development, design, testing and implementation of change requests related to workflow improvement, new test set up or test method changes
  • Build, Implement, maintain and troubleshoot data manager interfaces between LIS software and equipment which include working with software vendors, equipment vendors and lab staff (manager, LIS key ops)
  • Liaise with the informatics teams and participate in the set-up, maintenance and troubleshooting of interfaces with different hospital information systems with varying clients
  • Provide advice, guidance, and training to laboratory staff in the operation of the LIS applications
  • Play an integral part in major system upgrades: learn new features and functionalities; together with the system vendor, create a project plan and estimate the resources required and timelines; oversee designated resources in the build of the new features and changes; provide project updates to management and mitigation strategies as needed; develop validation plans and training SOPs; provide training and support at implementation, stabilization and optimization periods
  • Monitor daily error logs (instrument interfaces, client interfaces, failed faxes, queued print jobs, unmapped test codes) prioritizing those that require immediate corrective action; investigate and resolve issues related to incorrect or missing system setups (test setups, doctor codes, fax codes) that may prevent the timely reporting of patient results
  • Ensure correct patient demographics, merge/unmerge patient records, and amend reports related to patient demographic errors in conjunction with hospital health records and systems
  • Maintain and apply structured data (including doctor dictionaries, SQL and ODBC queries, SoftWorkload files, and LIS database tables) to support reporting, billing, auditing, and data access
  • Hold meetings with the lab staff on options/functionality/limitations to proactively develop solutions to prevent problem re-occurrences and to meet regulatory guidelines and operational needs
  • Set-up new users with the appropriate access to the LIS applications based on roles; promptly remove LIS access for staff who leave
  • Ensure compliance with all security policies across the labs and produce regulatory audit reports as needed for patient safety and privacy
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
