Job summary

Douglas College in New Westminster/Coquitlam campus is seeking a temporary part-time Biology Lab Assistant to oversee lab procedures and student learning. The role focuses on guiding students through lab work, preparing engaging assignments, and fostering an encouraging environment to learn biology.

The position runs 20 hours per week for eight months, from August 31, 2026 to April 30, 2027, with standard hours 9:00 am–4:30 pm, and occasional evenings or weekends as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Biology.
  • Public Speaking ability.
  • Knowledge of operation and routine maintenance of biology lab equipment and safety measures (GHS/WHMIS).
  • Good working knowledge of English (written and verbal).
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with students, faculty, staff and the public.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper laboratory techniques.
  • Maintain current knowledge in biology.

Salary Range

$32.04 per hour (with wage increments to a max of $36.06 per hour). Salary and wage increments are in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

What It Takes


  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Biology

  • Public Speaking ability

  • Excellent working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus together with good working knowledge of safety measures related to the operation of the Biology laboratory, including GHS ( WHMIS )

  • Good working knowledge of English (written and verbal).

  • A demonstrated ability to:


    • communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and the public.

    • work independently with minimum direct supervision.

    • establish priorities and achieve deadlines.

    • effectively demonstrate proper laboratory techniques.

    • maintain current knowledge in the field of biology.



Additional Information


  • This temporary part-time (20 hours per week) 8 month position is available starting August 31, 2026 to April 30, 2027.

  • Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday 9:00am – 4:30 pm. Shift days and times may change depending on the Department’s need. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.

  • The position is located at the New Westminster campus; however, successful candidate must be available for occasional work at the Coquitlam campus.
