Laboratory Technologist - MLT (Part-Time Seasonal)

Job Summary

This position will work in collaboration with laboratory science programs in the School of Health Sciences (SoHS). Under the direction of the Dean and/or Associate Dean, this position sets annual priorities for meeting the meeting of the various and emerging needs of the School of Health Sciences. Time allotted per program will vary throughout the year and will be determined prior to the beginning of each semester.

Responsibilities
  • Provides general operation and maintenance support to the program.
  • Utilizes timetables, course syllabuses, and lab manuals with initiative to prepare, set out and dismantle teaching supplies and equipment to assist in meeting program outcomes.
  • Maintains laboratory, equipment and work areas in clean, workable and safe conditions.
  • Assists instructors in the demonstration of instructional equipment, processes and procedures during lab periods, explaining principles and operation of equipment and instruments, and guiding students regarding consequences of negative laboratory outcomes.
  • Makes minor repairs to equipment and instruments; arranges for major repairs and preventive maintenance with companies as required.
  • Assists senior laboratory technologist with orders of supplies and expendable items; maintains inventory control and records.
  • Assesses and identifies the need for new equipment or capital supplies prior to budget preparation each year and submits business cases to the Associate Dean.
  • Assesses and calibrates educational equipment and instruments to manufacturers’ standards and compliance with area specifications.
  • Performs quality control procedures.
  • Prepares and maintains procedure manuals, slide inventory logbooks, and maintenance logs for instruments and equipment to meet accreditation requirements.
  • Assists in maintaining the quality of the slide collections.
  • Monitors equipment, prep and lab area for safety and general functioning.
  • Ensures lab compliance with current Biosafety and WHMIS regulations (WHMIS/GHS labelling, MSDS sheets, etc.) as required.
  • Attends department and divisional meetings.
  • Monitors and supervises students in daily quality control procedures and lab safety.
  • Travels to local clinical sites to collect samples for laboratory preparation.
  • Part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission and goals of the College and supporting learners.
  • Promotes a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating professionally with students and colleagues.
  • Other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Recognized two‑year diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology Science.
  • Certified by, and a registered member in good standing with, the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • Three years or more directly related recent work experience in the field.
  • Experience working with various instruments and in all five disciplines of the profession.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Initiative and organizational abilities with minimal supervision.

Compensation and Location

Salary: $37.12 per hour.
