Job summary

Alberta Precision Labs is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant I to support clinical laboratory operations at South Health Campus. You will handle procurement, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, ensuring accurate patient/sample identification and reporting results.

Responsibilities include maintaining specimen integrity, training and supervising students, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to meet turnaround times while upholding safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Requires accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
  • Recent phlebotomy experience within the last year.
  • Experience with RRL setting or large organization within the last year.
  • Ability to interpret workflow visuals and meet turnaround times.
  • Experience with neonatal skin puncture and pediatric venipuncture.
  • EPIC Connect Care Training completed.
  • Experience with Rover in the last 6 months.
  • Proficiency in data entry.
  • Experience in outpatient lab patient flow.

Job description

Reporting to the Supervisor or Manager, this position is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to collections and/or specimen processing, quality management, troubleshooting, and general support. Handles, stores, transports and disposes of biological and other hazardous materials according to guidelines; records information as required. Enters patient and specimen information into the Laboratory Information System. Appropriately prioritizes the collection, processing and testing of specimens. This position ensures accurate patient and sample identification as required, ensures sample integrity and suitability as required and documents unusual occurrences and notifies appropriate senior staff member. The MLA follows and is aware of all safety precautions and practices including WHMIS and participates in the maintenance of a safe working environment. Operates, maintains, and performs troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory equipment. Takes appropriate action and ensures proper follow up, as required. Maintains records as appropriate to their scope of work. Communicates with physicians/nurses/healthcare professionals regarding patient samples. Escalates requests or inquiries as required. Monitors department supply inventory and acts appropriately to maintain. Participates in the training, orientation, scheduling and performance management of students and staff. Performs administrative duties such as filing, faxing, reports distribution, and archiving when required. Collaborates on the preparation of manuals. Completes all required reading. Maintains competence through training and competency testing. Performs other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Recent and relevant experience and competency in phlebotomy techniques within the last year. Recent and relevant experience in RRL setting or an organization of significant size, complexity, and diversity within the last year. Experience interpreting workflow visuals and ability to respond appropriately to meet turn around times. Experience with neonatal skin puncture within the last year. Experience with pediatric venipuncture. Completion of EPIC Connect Care Training. Recent experience in using Rover within the last 6 months. Proficiency in data entry. Experience in outpatient lab one patient flow process. Demonstrates excellent reliability, accuracy, productivity and quality of work in adherence to policies, procedures and performance standards. Outstanding interpersonal and customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs. Courses or certificates in personal leadership development. Courses or training in process improvement or change management. WHMIS, TDG certificate.
