Job summary

ALS is seeking a Laboratory Analyst to work both independently and as part of a team on a variety of lab tasks, analyses, maintenance, and data generation in Vancouver.

The role requires a B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Chemistry and at least 1 year of related lab experience, with strong English communication and proficiency in MS Office. Position involves shift work including weekends and a focus on accuracy, safety, and timely results for clients.

Qualifications

  • Good English communication skills (auditory, verbal, written, reading).
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) at an intermediate level.
  • Accurate and efficient data entry with strong organizational abilities.
  • Completion of B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Chemistry is required.
  • 1 year of analytical lab or related experience is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Operate instruments following documented methods and procedures.
  • Prepare samples, reagents, standards, and reference materials for analysis.
  • Analyze samples with laboratory instrumentation to generate results for clients.
  • Record, review, and archive data; perform data processing as needed.
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair instruments as required.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to deliver timely results to clients.
  • Make technical decisions for non-routine analyses or matrices.
  • Monitor inventory of spare parts and consumables.
  • Follow SOPs and QA/QC requirements; meet Turnaround Times.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and ALS health and safety policies.

About the Position

The Laboratory Analyst will work independently and as part of a team to accomplish a variety of lab tasks, including analyses, lab maintenance, and generating data.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Responsibility for instrument operation following documented specific methods and/or procedures;
  • Prepare samples, reagents, standards, and reference materials for analysis;
  • Analyze samples of different matrices using laboratory instrumentation to generate accurate results for clients;
  • Complete required data processing activities (i.e. data entry, calculations, review, archival, etc.) and documentation;
  • Perform instrument/equipment calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and/or repairs as required;
  • Work with Project Managers to deliver accurate results and updates to our clients in a timely manner;
  • Perform technical decision making for non-routine, complex analyses or matrices;
  • Monitor inventory of spare parts and consumables;
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;
  • Organize workload to meet Turn Around Times (TAT);
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Good English communication skills (auditory, verbal, written, and reading) as required;
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) at an intermediate level;
  • Confident computer skills;
  • Accurate and efficient data entry skills;
  • Capability to perform repetitive tasks correctly in a fast-paced environment;
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines such as Turnaround Times (TAT) and holding requirements;
  • Analytical and process oriented skills with the ability to critically think in ambiguous situations;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • A strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
  • A commitment to excellence and a client-focused attitude.
Required Qualifications
  • Completion of B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Chemistry or a related discipline (required);
  • 1 years' experience in an analytical laboratory or related field experience (asset);
  • Previous experience with Metals analysis (asset).
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs/14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
  • Ability to stand for a full shift;
  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
  • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
