Job summary

ALS is seeking a detail-oriented lab technician to prepare client samples for extraction and analysis at our Edmonton laboratory. You will work independently and as part of a team, handling logging, sample prep, and documentation to ensure accurate results.

Responsibilities include processing samples, measuring masses, performing extractions, calibrating equipment, and maintaining safe, organized workspaces.

Qualifications

  • Good English communication skills required (auditory, verbal, written, and reading).
  • Intermediate user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), with confident computer skills.
  • Organized, analytical, and process oriented.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Ability to handle pressure from high sample volumes and competing turnaround times.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required.

Responsibilities

  • Process samples in a timely manner to meet client Turnaround Times (TAT) and holding requirements.
  • Measure sample mass/volume, add surrogates, perform extractions using common laboratory solvents.
  • Extraction and concentration of required parameters in soil, water and oil samples as well as other non-routine matrices.
  • Calibration, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting of basic lab instruments.
  • Addition of quality control standards such as matrix spike and surrogate solutions.
  • Clean glassware and laboratory equipment.
  • Monitor and restock laboratory consumables/chemicals.
  • Samples shelving, archiving, and disposal.
  • Prepare reagents, standards, and reference materials.
  • Record-keeping and documentation.
  • Monitor controlled equipment.
  • Use correct methods per procedures and schedules ensuring analytical quality.
  • Observe safety regulations and ALS health and safety policies.

About the Position:

The successful applicant will be responsible for preparing client samples for extraction and analysis, and sample login activities at the laboratory while maintaining a clean and safe work environment. You will be working independently and in a team environment, with an emphasis on providing quality and efficient service to clients.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Process samples in a timely manner, to meet client Turnaround Times (TAT) and holding requirements;
  • Measure sample mass/volume, add surrogates, perform extractions using common laboratory solvents;
  • Extraction and concentration of required parameters in soil, water and oil samples as well as other non- routine matrices;

  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Team Lead.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Good English communication skills required (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);

Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
  • Ability to sit or stand for a full shift;
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required.
