Job summary

ALS Environmental in Calgary is seeking a detail‑oriented lab assistant to prepare, extract and analyze soil and water samples. You will generate worklists, retrieve samples, and operate instruments such as pipettes, centrifuges and pH meters while following SOPs.

The role requires basic lab safety knowledge, ability to lift up to 30 lbs, and good teamwork to meet strict turnaround times. Training is provided, and benefits apply.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Some experience in fast-paced lab/preparation environment is a plus.
• Knowledge from science courses or basic lab safety is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Generate worklists and organise workloads to meet Turn Around Times and hold times.
• Retrieve samples from storage and handle lifting of soils and water samples.
• Operate basic lab instruments (pipettes, shakers, centrifuges, pH meters, etc.).
• Prepare samples for analysis (filtration, extraction, digestion).
• Perform data processing and record-keeping; QA/QC as per SOPs.

At ALS, we encourage you to dream big.When you join us, you’ll be part of a global team harnessing the power of scientific testing and data-driven insights to build a healthier future.Location ALS Environmental, CalgaryReports to: Water Quality SupervisorAbout the Position:This position is responsible for performing preparations, extractions and analysis on soil and water samples.Specific ResponsibilitiesGenerate worklists and organise workload to meet Turn Around Times (TAT’s) and hold timesRetrieve samples from storage (includes some lifting and carrying of soils and water samples);Operate simple lab instrument/equipment such as pipettes, shakers, centrifuges, pH meters, flash point apparatus, etc.Assist with loading and running TOC, PCT, chlorides, BOD/COD;Calibration and use of pipettes;Perform sample preparation – filtration, screening, extraction, pasting and digestion of soil and water samples for further analysis;Prepare all required reagents, standards, reference materials, etc.Fill out bench sheets completely and accurately;Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of basic lab equipment;Carry out all required data processing (i.e. calculations, data review, data entry, archival, etc.);Carry out all required record-keeping & documentation;General laboratory clean-up and maintenance;Assist in sample flow and archiving as well as data archiving;Monitor controlled equipment;Perform all required quality control procedures;Follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requirements, deviations must be approved by Supervisor or Manager;Data entry into GEL;QC review of peer data;Adhere to strict QA/QC requirementsTraining of LA1 and LA2;Other duties as assigned by Section Supervisor.Required Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesOrganized and detail oriented;Highly motivated with a cheerful attitude and strong work ethic;Excellent communication skills (written and verbal);Excellent computer skills;Demonstrated ability to work in a team;Demonstrated ability to work to deadlines.Required QualificationsCompletion of high school diploma or equivalent required;Some experience working in a fast-paced, production, and/or preparation environment;Knowledge from high school science courses and/or basic laboratory safety is an asset;Experience working with chemicals or in a laboratory setting (ex. school) is an asset, but not required;Physical DemandsAbility to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;Able to climb stairs;Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;Ability to stand for a full shift;Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.Our benefits include:An estimated hourly pay of $20.74 CAD at the time of posting.
