Job description

Description

The Department of Physiology & Pharmacologyin the Cumming School of Medicineinvites applications for a Laboratory Aide. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The position of Lab Aide for the Alberta Centre for Toxicology (ACFT) reports to the Laboratory Manager, and to the Director.

The Alberta Centre for Toxicology (ACFT) is a public health laboratory. It is under the direction of Health Surveillance, Alberta Health and administered by the University of Calgary under the jurisdiction of the Cumming School of Medicine. The Laboratory Aide works in the Reception area of the environmental toxicology laboratory, receiving and processing samples for testing elsewhere in the lab. Samples include environmental samples (water and air) and biological samples (blood and urine). The workload varies according to the number of samples received and shift rotation between days and evenings.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Receive/perform sample login on Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and aliquot samples in accordance with laboratory procedures
  • Perform filing, faxing, and sending sample rejection letters
  • Order general and laboratory supplies and update databases using PeopleSoft
  • Calibrate small laboratory equipment such as pipettes and refractometers
  • Monitor and change gas cylinders and dewars
  • Rinse/put away laboratory glassware and check the water system
  • Perform housekeeping tasks such as recording temperature for freezers/fridges/laboratory, cleaning/mopping the laboratory floor; disposing samples/biohazard wastes; and taking out recycle bins

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • High School Diploma and one year of related experience is desirable
  • Good English language skills in reading, writing and oral communication are required
  • Good knowledge and experience with basic keyboarding, Windows computer software and data entry skills
  • Experience in AHS Millennium LIMS or other commercial laboratory LIMS is desirable
  • Good organizational and time management skills, accuracy and strong attention to details when performing tasks
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, prioritize, multi-task, and maintain a flexible schedule based on needs
  • Physically fit to lift moderately heavy objects (20 to 40 lbs) and pull/push gas cylinders/dewars that are on wheeled carts (200 to 600 lbs)
  • Normal working hours are the day shift (Monday to Friday), but some flexibility on working hours is desirable.
