A leading university in Ontario is seeking a Laboratory Support Technician to assist in the operations of the Biology Department's teaching laboratories. The role includes setting up laboratory rooms, preparing materials, and ensuring adherence to safety regulations. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in laboratory techniques and excellent communication skills, along with the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
The role is to provide technical support for the successful operations of the teaching laboratories in the Department of Biology. This includes setting up laboratory rooms according to laboratory requirements, modifying techniques if necessary in consultation with the course/laboratory directors, and preparing requisite materials.
Education & Experience:
Two years of related experience, including assembling, testing, and using laboratory equipment, setting up experiments, and assessing results in a laboratory setting. Experience in troubleshooting, including literature reviews.
Skills:
In-depth knowledge and experience in laboratory techniques and methodologies in Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Physiology. Familiarity with laboratory safety regulations and guidelines, and operating a wide variety of laboratory instruments.
Ability to support ecology, physiology, molecular biology, and microbiological laboratories.
Operational knowledge of laboratory safety, media preparation, sterile techniques, and animal/aquarium maintenance and handling.
Communication Skills:
Good oral and written communication skills.
Additional Skills:
Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain laboratory instruments such as microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, balances, incubators, autoclaves, and pH meters.
Interpersonal and Organizational Skills:
Ability to deal courteously and effectively with others, attend to detail, work independently, set priorities, exercise good judgment, and plan and execute complex tasks under pressure or deadlines.
