Job description

The Greenstone Mine commenced production in May 2024 and will be one of Canada’s largest open-pit gold mines, with annual production expected to average nearly 400,000 ounces of gold per year for an initial 14-year mine life with additional potential from a large underground deposit. Greenstone Gold Mines LP is owned by Equinox Gold Corp, a Vancouver-based mining company with seven other operating mines in the United States, Mexico and Brazil.

Job Summary

We are seeking an Assay Lab Supervisor to join our team. The Assay Lab Supervisor reports to the Senior Assayer and is responsible for the overall coordination and scheduling of incoming samples from the mine site, prioritizing samples in order of importance, overseeing the production of the laboratory and reporting results to mine departments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the assay lab department.
  • Provide a platform for strong leadership and workforce empowerment by training and developing Assay Lab employees in all aspects of the lab functions and duties.
  • Coordinate and liaise with the mill, geological and metallurgy departments to ensure samples are accounted and assayed within the established turnaround timelines.
  • Direct the processing and testing of ore samples and analyzes results to determine grade, value and mineral properties.
  • Perform operation and maintenance of key analytical equipment such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer, fire assay furnaces, microbalance, related lab equipment and sample preparation equipment.
  • Ensure daily production targets are met and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Research and implement new technology to increase effectiveness and efficiency of assay operations.
  • Ensure that all employees work safely and in accordance with applicable legislation, company policy, standards, and procedures.
  • Report hazards and incidents in a timely manner in accordance with Greenstone Gold Mines Health and Safety protocols.
  • Maintain and control Assay Laboratory inventory and place orders to ensure continuous operations.
  • Prepare monthly reports of production statistics, consumables usage, safety and training.
  • Organize, schedule and direct personnel activities.
  • Prepare and implement SOPs related to health and safety of lab operations, sample preparation and lab assaying techniques.
  • Liaise with other departments (safety, environmental, site services, site access, mill operations, metallurgy and geology) for the purpose of proper assay department functions.
Required Experience and Skill Set
  • Minimum 5 years working experience in an assay lab supervisory role
  • Strong expertise/knowledge of mineral processing, extraction and assaying.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Canadian Federal and Provincial mining and safety legislation and regulations.
  • Previous experience with LIMS is an asset.
  • Knowledge of ISO 17025 certification for laboratories is an asset.
