Job summary

Sunnybrook Research Institute's Stefanovic Lab seeks an experienced Laboratory Manager to oversee both administrative operations and advanced neuroimaging workflows, ethics submissions, and mentoring of trainees.

You will supervise lab infrastructure, coordinate budgets and procurement, and lead data acquisition and analysis for MRI/fMRI, two‑photon microscopy, and electrophysiology studies, ensuring compliance with research guidelines.

Qualifications

• PhD or MSc in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, medical biophysics, computer science, or related field.
• Minimum 5+ years in a biomedical research lab in academia.
• Experience managing regulatory submissions and ethics protocols.
• Hands-on neuroimaging data acquisition/analysis expertise.
• Proficiency with MRI, microscopy, or electrophysiology data acquisitions.
• Familiarity with neuroimaging software and reproducible research practices.
• Strong leadership and communication across multidisciplinary teams.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced, high-level Laboratory Manager with extensive scientific and managerial expertise to oversee both administrative operations and technical research workflows. In addition to orchestrating daily laboratory operations, the successful candidate will engage in advanced neuroimaging data acquisition and analyses, provide dedicated support for Ethics Board submissions, and support ongoing studies and mentor trainees.

Key Responsibilities

• Regulatory Compliance: Draft, coordinate, submit, and maintain Ethics Board protocols, amendments, and annual renewals; interface with Sunnybrook's ethics oversight committees and ensure strict adherence to human and preclinical research guidelines, biosafety, and data governance frameworks.
• Neuroimaging Data Analysis: Oversee, develop, and execute processing pipelines for neuroimaging data (MRI/fMRI, two-photon fluorescence microscopy, and/or electrophysiology); perform quality control, statistical modeling, and data management; assist lab members with analytical troubleshooting and data interpretation.
• Laboratory Operations & Administration: Manage lab infrastructure, service contracts, vendor relationships, equipment maintenance schedules, and hazardous materials compliance; ensure audit-readiness across all research spaces.
• Financial & Grant Management: Oversee operational and grant budgets, track consumable expenditures, and coordinate purchase requisitions.
• Supervision & Mentorship: Train and mentor graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and technical staff on standard operating procedures, ethics protocols requirements, and analysis workflows.

Qualifications

• Education: M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Biophysics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
• Experience: Minimum 5+ years of professional experience working in a biomedical research laboratory at an academic research institute.
• Experience: Demonstrated track record managing regulatory submissions, ethics board protocols and compliance documentation.
• Experience: Proven, hands-on neuroimaging data acquisition and analysis expertise (e.g., fMRI, two-photon fluorescence microscopy or electrophysiology).
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in MRI, microscopy, and/or electrophysiology data acquisitions.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in standard neuroimaging software packages (e.g., FSL, SPM, AFNI, FreeSurfer, ANTs) and scientific programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R).
• Technical Skills: Familiarity with data standards and reproducible research practices.
