Job summary

The Nam̱gis First Nation is seeking a Junior Payroll Clerk to support accurate, timely payroll and benefits administration for all employees and affiliated entities. Reporting to the Comptroller, you will process bi‑weekly payroll, maintain records, and ensure statutory reporting requirements are met, while assisting with benefits onboarding and pension administration.

Qualifications

  • Foundational experience in payroll or accounting, with exposure to bi-weekly payroll processing, benefits administration, accounts payable/receivable, or general ledger reconciliation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a collaborative finance team, supporting shared deadlines, monthly reporting cycles, and cross-functional priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to maintain organized records, reconcile accounts, and uphold internal controls across payroll and financial processes.
  • An understanding of statutory payroll requirements, including EI, CPP, taxes, WorkSafeBC, and other government reporting obligations.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain benefits, pension, and extended health plan documentation, including onboarding forms, updates, and annual submissions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work respectfully with staff, vendors, community members, and external agencies.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, meet bi-weekly payroll deadlines, and support monthly reconciliation schedules.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word, including spreadsheets, data entry, and basic analysis; comfort learning new systems such as Adagio or payroll/benefits platforms.
  • Demonstrated integrity, confidentiality, and sound judgment in handling sensitive payroll and personnel information.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision, showing initiative, reliability, and a willingness to learn and grow in payroll and accounting functions.

Responsibilities

  • Process bi-weekly payroll.
  • Ensures compliance with statutory reporting and payment requirements (taxes, EI, CPP, WCB, ISC, etc.).
  • Prepares Records of Employment as required.
  • Prepares monthly reconciliation of payroll-related general ledger account codes.
  • Orients new hires on benefits and ensures required forms are signed and submitted.
  • Informs personnel of benefit updates or changes.
  • Responsible for record keeping and reporting of staff pension and extended benefit plans.
  • Handles workplace injury reports and files necessary forms with WorkSafe BC.
  • Prepares and remits all requirements to WorkSafe BC.
  • Disburses petty cash payments within policy.
  • Manages submission of annual Pension return, WCB, EHR, and other payroll compliance reporting.
  • Staff claim processing and related documentation.

About The Role

The Junior Payroll Clerk supports the accurate, timely, and compliant administration of payroll and benefits for all 'Nam̱gis First Nation employees and affiliated entities. Reporting to the Comptroller, this role works closely with the Payroll Clerk to process bi‑weekly payroll, maintain payroll records, and ensure statutory reporting requirements are met. The position also assists with benefits onboarding, pension and extended health plan administration, and the preparation of required submissions to government agencies and WorkSafeBC. This role is well‑suited for someone who is detail‑oriented, organized, and eager to grow their technical skills in payroll and financial administration. The Junior Payroll Clerk contributes directly to strong internal controls, reliable financial reporting, and the delivery of responsive payroll services to staff across the Nation. As part of a collaborative finance team, the successful candidate will demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to supporting transparent and accountable operations.
