Job summary

Baffinland invites applications for a Junior Environmental Specialist for the Mary River Mine Site in NU, Canada. Qualifications

• Post-secondary diploma or degree in environmental science, environmental technology, biology, geology, engineering technology, natural-resource management or a related discipline is preferred.
• A combination of relevant project experience, technical competence, writing and analytical ability may be considered in place of the preferred education.
• Experience in environmental monitoring, compliance, operations, data management or related fields is preferred.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Environmental Superintendent or designate, the Junior Environmental Specialist participates in a structured professional-development program intended to build the technical, regulatory, analytical and operational competencies required for progression into an Environmental Specialist role. The Junior Specialist receives cross-functional experience across the Environmental Department while completing increasingly complex assignments in areas such as regulatory reporting, environmental monitoring, technical review, data interpretation, Environmental Work Plan review, management planning, incident follow-up and operational support. The primary development focus will be aligned with departmental priorities, individual aptitude and the current distribution of Specialist work. The role combines office-based analytical and reporting responsibilities with direct participation in field implementation, inspections, training, mentoring and environmental incident response. Assignments are completed under progressively reduced supervision as competencies are demonstrated.

Main Accountabilities

• Supports the preparation, coordination, review and quality assurance of regulatory reports, technical submissions, internal summaries and associated tracking tools.
• Assists with the interpretation and implementation of applicable permits, licences, Project Certificate conditions, management plans, procedures and environmental commitments.
• Supports the planning, scheduling, field implementation and evaluation of environmental monitoring programs.
• Coordination and development of regulatory reports including regulatory requirements stipulated by the Commercial Lease, Project Certificate, water licences and other regulatory instruments, legislation and approvals
• Completes data review, routine QA/QC, basic analysis, tabulation and visualization, and identifies apparent gaps, anomalies or follow-up requirements.
• Assists with the review of Environmental Work Plans, scopes of work and operational proposals to identify environmental requirements, mitigation measures and verification needs.
• Participates in inspections, field verification, spill and environmental incident response, investigation, documentation, corrective-action follow-up and lessons-learned activities.
• Coordinates defined contributions from Environmental staff, operating departments, contractors, consultants and laboratories to support assigned deliverables.
• Maintains clear, complete and auditable records, including commitments, actions, decisions, correspondence, review comments and final work products.
• Prepares professional emails, memoranda, report sections, presentations, training material and technical summaries appropriate to the trainee's level of delegated responsibility.

Provides technical support to the Environmental Team within demonstrated areas of competence.

Main Qualifications

• Post-secondary diploma or degree in environmental science, environmental technology, biology, geology, engineering technology, natural-resource management or a related discipline is preferred.
• A combination of relevant Project experience, technical competence, demonstrated writing and analytical ability, and clear development potential may be considered in place of the preferred education.
• Relevant experience in environmental monitoring, compliance, operations, technical coordination, data management, report preparation or a related field is preferred.
• Experience working at the Mary River Project or in a remote mining, construction or industrial environment is an asset.
• Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel, environmental databases, document-control systems or field-data applications is an asset.
• Previous exposure to permits, licences, management plans, monitoring programs, inspections, spill response or consultant coordination is an asset.
• Strong written communication and the ability to organize information clearly, accurately and objectively.
• Analytical aptitude, sound judgment and willingness to distinguish confirmed facts from assumptions or information gaps.
• Careful attention to detail, record keeping, document control and quality assurance.
• Ability to plan work, manage deadlines, follow up with contributors and elevate concerns appropriately.
• Ability to read and interpret written requirements, procedures, permits, technical documents and data tables.
• Competence with computers and willingness to develop advanced proficiency in Word, Excel, databases and document-management systems.
• Professional communication and the ability to work constructively with field staff, management, operating departments, consultants and regulators.
• Initiative, reliability, adaptability and receptiveness to editing, coaching and constructive feedback.
• Ability to work independently within delegated authority while recognizing when Specialist or management review is required.

• Rotational work schedule providing continuity and cross-shift coverage.
• Combination of office-based work and field activities in Arctic conditions, including inspections, monitoring support, work-area review and incident response.
• Frequent computer use and extended periods of reading, writing, data review and document preparation.
• Ability to travel within the Project area and work around active mining, transportation, marine and construction activities.
• Valid driver's licence or ability to obtain site driving authorization is required.
• Additional certifications such as PCOC, PAL, first aid or role-specific technical training may be required depending on assigned duties
