The Government of Alberta is committed to a diverse and inclusive public service that reflects the population we serve. Consider joining a team where diversity, inclusion, and innovation are valued and supported.

The Ministry of Justice helps ensure that all Albertans can live in safe and resilient communities while having access to a fair and innovative justice system. Working alongside its partners in law enforcement, family justice, health, the judiciary, criminal justice system, and other stakeholders, the ministry has a direct or shared responsibility in all elements of the justice system in Alberta.

The Court of Appeal of Alberta sits in both Edmonton and Calgary and hears criminal appeals from the Provincial Court and both criminal and civil appeals from the Court of Queen's Bench. It also hears appeals from administrative and board tribunals and reviews records to determine whether errors of law or fact were made in a decision.

The Court of Appeal of Alberta is looking for a motivated, hardworking, and reliable individual to join their team as a Judicial Clerk or Senior Judicial Clerk!

As a Judicial Clerk or Senior Judicial Clerk, you will represent the administration of the Courts in a professional manner that reflects the fair and equitable delivery of justice in Alberta. You will be responsible for the administrative processes in the Registry office and within the courtroom, as well as assisting the public and legal community at the counter. The shifting priorities between the courtroom and assisting the public and lawyers in the office makes this a fast-paced and dynamic role.

Your role involves, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Reviewing and filing electronic documents ensuring adherence with the Alberta Rules of Court, and various Provincial and Federal statutes.
  • Data entry which includes entering documents, scheduling hearings, preparing correspondence, etc.

  • Operating the Digital Recording equipment (FTR).
  • Creating and maintaining accurate clerk’s notes in court and preparing post-court documentation.
  • Liaising with judiciary, lawyers, and the general public.

To be successful in this role, you should embrace change, be decisive, and adaptable to changing environments. As a frontline representative of the Court of Appeal, you will anticipate and understand the needs of clients, providing excellent customer service to Albertans.

As the ideal candidate, you will bring:

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • The ability to deal with strict deadlines, high volume demands as well as the ability to handle highly stressful situations.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent word processing and keyboarding skills.
  • The ability to adapt to changing environments and thrive under pressure.
  • The ability to work independently and as an effective team member.

*Please note that only candidates with Judicial Clerk experience may be considered at the higher classification level and salary of a Senior Judicial Clerk.

Equivalency: Related experience or education considered on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

The following will be considered related experience:
