Job summary

Startec Compression & Process Ltd is seeking an Apprentice Machinist to join our day shift at the Shepard Shop in Calgary. You will collaborate with Production Leadership, Drafting/Engineering, and shop floor staff to meet schedules, quality and safety requirements.

The role offers hands-on machining experience on CNC and manual machines, with focus on setup, measurement, and compliance with drawings, under the Production Leadership Team.

Qualifications

• Journeyperson certificate or equivalent preferred.
• 5+ years of machining experience.
• Experience with manual programming and CAM software (Mastercam).
• Ability to run both CNC and manual machines.
• Read and interpret drawings.

Responsibilities

• Operates lathe and milling machines to manufacture parts.
• Reads drawings and interprets specifications, selects tooling and settings.
• Maintains machine setups and sequences to meet production schedules.
• Performs quality checks and documents results.
• Maintains a safe and clean work area and adheres to safety policies.

We are an integrated project and engineering equipment fabricator specializing in the modularized design and packaging of process, refrigeration, and rotating equipment solutions.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Compression & Process is currently recruiting an Apprentice Machinist to work on our dayshift at our Shepard Shop facility (9423 Shepard Rd SE, Calgary, AB T2C 4R6). The successful candidate will work with the Production Leadership Team, Drafting/Engineering, and shop floor employees to coordinate efforts to meet production schedules, quality, and safety requirements. Shift 5:50-4:20 (4 days/week,10 hours/day). Overtime is as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Journeyperson Certificate (Red Seal Interprovincial preferred)
• 5+ years of machining experience
• Experience with manual programming and CAM software (Mastercam)
• Ability to run both CNC and Manual machines
• Strong mechanical aptitude
• Collaborative team player with positive engagement
• Strong organizational and communication skills; both written and verbal
• Ability to read and interpret drawings

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):

PRODUCTION (Weighting 80%)

Machine Setup & Operation

• Operates and maintains lathe and milling machines.
• Takes precise measurements for cutting or shaping.
• Selects appropriate machine and settings for a given task.
• Plans proper sequence of tasks to complete the assignment .

Quality Control

• Reviews drawings, instructions, blueprints, or samples to ensure accurate production.
• Monitors production, adjusts feed, and other settings as necessary.
• Checks output for quality assurance and documents defects .

SAFETY (Weighting 20%)

Maintenance

• Identifies need for and performs machine maintenance and minor repairs.
• Maintains a safe and clean work area.
• Promotes and enforces a safety-first culture, ensuring compliance with safety policies and conducting regular briefings.

Documentation

• Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
• Ensures accurate documentation of production, quality, and safety records.
