Job summary

The Abbotsford School District is hiring a Journeyman Carpenter for a 12-month, temporary position at the Facilities building on King Road. You will construct, repair and install wooden structures in district facilities under the Foreman—Carpenter.

Ideal candidates bring a minimum of 5 years of carpentry experience, a valid BC driver's license, and a Interprovincial Carpentry qualification. The role runs Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with safety standards and district procedures

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 diploma plus Interprovincial Carpentry Qualification.
  • Minimum 5 years of related carpentry experience.
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related software.
  • Knowledge of building codes and WHMIS safety rules.

Responsibilities

  • Construct, erect, install, and repair structures per specs and codes.
  • Prepare labour, material, and time estimates for work orders.
  • Provide technical guidance to other trades and staff.
  • Advise on new installations, repairs or upgrades.
  • Inspect facilities and report on condition with corrective actions.
  • Submit orders for parts and supplies to complete work orders.
  • Respond to service calls as required.
  • Ensure safe storage and maintenance of tools and supplies.
  • Maintain knowledge of district policies related to the position.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations to minimize hazards.
  • Undertake related duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This unionized position is a 12-month, temporary position based out of our Facilities building at 31759 King Road. Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Under the general direction of the Foreman—Carpenter, the Trades—Journeyman Carpenter is responsible for functions involving constructing, erecting, installing and repairing structures of wood, plywood, wallboard, and associated building materials in district facilities.

This position performs a variety of technical/manual tasks under limited supervision and in accordance with clearly established policies, procedures, regulations and codes. Judgment is exercised in handling new assignments and determining new work methods.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Construct, erect, install, and repair structures using hand and power tools to conform with specifications and related building and fire codes.

  • Prepare estimates of labour, materials, and time required for new installations, renovations, repairs or replacement of equipment, fixtures, accessories and structures.

  • Provide support, technical advice and training to other trades and district staff relating to carpentry.

  • Providing advice and assistance related to new installations, repairs or modifications/upgrades to existing structures.

  • Inspect facilities, equipment and fixtures for preventative maintenance; prepare written reports of condition and provide recommendation for correction action.

  • Submitting order/requisitions to Foreman for parts and supplies inventory and/or purchasing supplies on an as needed basis to complete work orders.

  • Responding to service calls as required.

  • Ensuring equipment and supplies used to perform duties are stored and maintained appropriately.

  • Maintaining a working knowledge of district operational/personnel policies related to the position.

  • Ensuring compliance with district and government health and safety procedures and regulations within the Facilities Management department to minimize potential for accidents, injuries and hazards.

  • Undertaking related duties, as assigned consistent with this position

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Grade 12 diploma, or equivalent, supplemented by a current Interprovincial Trades Qualification in Carpentry. A minimum of 5 years’ recent related work experience. A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license. As well, incumbents also require the following:

  • Proven ability to use Microsoft Office programs, internet and internet-based programs, with the ability to learn other software programs;

  • Proven ability to determine, judge and select appropriate courses of action in accordance with established policies and procedures;

  • Understanding and awareness of cultural diversity;

  • Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize, self-motivate, and meet deadlines;

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to provide service and relationship to the public and School District in a professional, respectful, positive and courteous manner;

  • Proven ability to establish and maintain positive, effective work relationships in a team environment at all times ;

  • Proven ability to use tact and discretion and maintain confidentiality in matters pertaining to the School District;

  • Working knowledge of WHMIS and WorkSafe BC occupational health and safety regulations and the demonstrated ability to work in a manner that recognizes personal safety and the safety of others;

  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable and resilient to change;

  • Ability to explain complex or simple instructions or information clearly to others;

  • Working knowledge of the technical drawings, regulations and codes, standard practices, methods, materials and tools and equipment used in the trade;

  • Proven ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling and moving materials, equipment and supplies.
