Job description

As part of the Core Access Networks team, the IP Network Designer will be responsible for the design and architectural evolution of the Xplore Access & Aggregation networks. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Access & Aggregation Engineering in Markham, Ontario.

Key responsibilities
  • Planning and Design (network facility plans, capacity, scalability and security requirements)
  • Standards (develop, maintain standards, training to other departments)
  • Installation and Configuration (Plans and MOPs for installation and commissioning)
  • Preventative Maintenance
  • Capacity planning
  • Budgeting Support
  • Security and Compliance
Ideal candidate
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in network architecture and design within a service provider environment.
  • Engineering degree in Electrical or Computer Science (preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of internet delivery architectures, routing/switching protocols (BGP, OSPF, MPLS, ISIS), IPv4/IPv6, VPN, Ethernet services, and QoS.
  • Proficiency with Cisco platforms (IOS, IOS-XR, IOS-XE, NX-OS) and familiarity with vendors like Juniper, Ciena, Adva/Adtran.
  • Experience with network automation and scripting (Python, Ansible or similar).
  • Professional certifications such as CCIE Service Provider or JNCIE (highly desirable).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Strong project management and ability to handle multiple initiatives.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills for technical concepts and stakeholder collaboration.
  • Ability to build and manage strategic partner relationships and represent the organization externally.
  • Hands‑on experience with network performance optimization, lab testing, documentation, and training.
  • Willingness to participate in on‑call rotations and occasional travel.
  • Innovative mindset to develop tools, test plans, and solutions for network operations.
  • In depth knowledge of typical Service Provider Ethernet service offerings and MEF.
  • In depth knowledge of switching technologies such as VLANs, QinQ and Spanning Tree.
  • Knowledge of IP/Ethernet Quality of Service features such as classification, marking, queueing and shaping.
