Role Responsibilities

Do you have a solid background in law enforcement and/or regulatory investigations? If so, the Law Enforcement and Oversight Branch has an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional with exceptional investigative and auditing abilities!

You will investigate complaints alleging violations under the Security Services and Investigators Act , the Peace Officer Act and the Body Armour Control Act . You will also monitor and advise on public complaints and incidents, conduct field investigation and site visits, prepare written reports of the findings, and provide recommendations. Using your investigative skills, you will be required to provide an oversight function as it relates to appeals of public complaints against peace officers, excessive use of force allegations, and other serious incidents.

Using your excellent analytical skills, you will perform audits on licensed Security, Investigator, Locksmith and Peace Officer agencies to ensure compliance with the applicable Act and Regulations. For investigations or audits that involve legal action, you will prepare court briefs, liaise with Crown Prosecutors, and provide evidence in a court of law.

As the ideal candidate, you will put your superior communication skills to work in establishing and maintaining professional working relationships between the department and external agencies in order to develop rapport and share information. Working independently, you will use your significant initiative and judgment to accomplish objectives.

Qualifications

A university degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Law Enforcement, or related field plus a minimum of two year experience conducting investigations in a law enforcement or regulatory environment is required for this position.

Equivalency

  • Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year education for 1 year of experience,
  • or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Requirements Of This Position Include

  • Must be eligible for Peace Officer appointment
  • Valid Alberta driver's license (Class 5)
  • Current driver's abstract

Preference Will Be Given To Those With The Following

  • An investigative background with verifiable experience performing complex investigations and major case management.
  • Plain clothes investigative experience in a Detective Unit or General Investigation Section.

This position requires extensive travel throughout the province.
