Our organization

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Enforcement Division enforces Alberta securities laws by investigating, disrupting and prosecuting breaches of those laws with an eye for preventing and stopping current and future misconduct.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Investigations, the Securities Investigator will focus on detecting, disrupting and investigating market abuse matters, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to address these complex breaches of securities law. This specialized role sits at the intersection of traditional securities enforcement and modern data science, providing a unique opportunity to develop tools and models that identify complex patterns of abusive market behavior within a rapidly evolving trading environment.

Key responsibilities include
  • Developing analytical models and detection algorithms to identify patterns consistent with market manipulation, insider trading and other abusive trading behaviors.
  • Collaborating with legal, data science and enforcement teams to transform investigative hypotheses into scalable data-driven queries and detection framework.
  • Designing and implementing automated surveillance tools that flag suspicious trading activity across various asset classes and markets.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of evolving trading strategies, financial technologies, and regulatory developments to continuously improve detection capabilities.
  • Performing detailed analysis of listed securities using proprietary software, Bloomberg, Capital IQ, and other market/trade analysis tools.
  • Planning and conducting witness and respondent interviews, using the powers of a statutorily-appointed
  • Collecting evidence and relevant financial information, trade data and business records for
  • Preparing detailed investigative reports and collaborating with litigation counsel to support disciplinary actions or referrals, including providing testimony before ASC panels as required.
  • Cooperating and consulting with securities regulators in other jurisdictions (nationally and internationally), self-regulatory organizations, investment dealers, reporting issuers, police agencies, stock exchanges and related
  • Liaising with national and international regulatory bodies and police agencies to share best practices and support partnerships that may assist with cross-jurisdictional matters on market abuse.
The ideal candidate will possess
  • A minimum of eight - ten years of professional experience in the securities business with solid knowledge of capital markets, securities law, trading systems and current trading practices.
  • Proven experience in market abuse enforcement or investigations, ideally within a regulatory agency, exchange, or financial institution.
  • Strong expertise in market abuse investigations such as spoofing, layering, wash trading, and other forms of manipulation, alongside strong technical proficiency in coding, data analytics, and algorithmic pattern recognition.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more programming languages used for data science and analytics (e.g., Python, R, SQL).
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and analytical platforms.
  • A Bachelor’s or graduate degree in finance, economics, computer science, data science, or a related field.
  • A strong understanding of derivatives and commodities markets, trading mechanics and securities laws relevant to market manipulation and abuse.
  • Successful completion of the Canadian Securities Course and the Conduct and Practices Handbook Course or equivalent.
  • Excellent analytical, verbal and written communication skills, along with the ability to confidently present.
  • Possession of a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or a related designation would be an asset.

Note: The successful candidate will be required to provide a Police Information Check with results satisfactory to the ASC prior to commencement of employment.
