Job summary

Gerdau North America is seeking a university student for an Occupational Health and Safety internship at our Whitby, ON facility. This paid, full-time internship offers hands-on experience in promoting safe work practices within a major steel manufacturing environment.

You will conduct inspections, assist in incident investigations, and help deliver safety training while returning to full-time studies after the internship. This onsite program requires commuting distance to Whitby.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Analyze safety data and report KPIs for continuous improvement.

About G. Start, Gerdau's Next Generation

Gerdau is seeking university students to participate in our G. Start program. G. Start is a paid internship program with the goal of developing students for future technical and managerial positions. Program Requirements

  • Pursing a degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Human Resources or related from a recognized accredited college or university. Candidates MUST be returning to full-time studies following this internship.
  • Record of high academic achievement (GPA 3.0 or higher preferred).
  • Well-rounded applicants with leadership roles in student organizations or extra-curricular activities.
  • Must be legally authorized to work full-time in the country of hire without requiring current or future sponsorship for employment.
  • Candidates much demonstrate leadership potential, strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, initiative, and problem-solving skills.

About The Role

This position will be a full-time, 4, 6, 12 or 16-month long internship opportunity.

This job opportunity is fully onsite. There are no opportunities for remote work. Candidates MUST be in commutable distance from the facility located at 1 Gerdau Court in Whitby, ON.

Main Responsiblites

  • Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify hazards, ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, and promote a safe working environment.
  • Lead and support incident investigations, including root cause analysis, and develop corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Perform risk assessments to evaluate workplace hazards and recommend effective control measures to mitigate risks.
  • Assist in the development, coordination, and delivery of safety training programs to enhance employee awareness and compliance.
  • Analyze health and safety data, monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), and prepare reports to support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct contractor compliance audits to ensure adherence to company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
