Job summary

The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, ON is seeking an Intermediate Accountant to support month-end close, reconciliations, and reporting across performance arts, e-commerce and learning systems. You will process ARR/AP/AR, reconcile revenues and costs, and provide analysis to guide management decisions.

Reporting to the Manager, Systems and Financial Operations, you will collaborate with PAD and other departments on reconciliations, budgeting, and ad-hoc analyses, with a hybrid on-site

Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary education in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration with 2+ years of full-cycle accounting experience.
  • Enrolled in a recognized accounting program pursuing designation.
  • Capable of handling large amounts of information and managing expectations.
  • Aptitude for analyzing data, variances, accurate data entry and reconciliation.
  • Solid organizational skills with ability to work across entities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly reconciliations, GL accounts for deferred revenue, box office and donations with supporting schedules.
  • Verify and analyze data from Spektrix and upload to the financial system (MS Dynamics/BC).
  • Collaborate with PAD to record invoices and ensure timely billing.
  • Record and reconcile revenue, costs, A/P, and A/R for performance arts events.
  • Reconcile Shopify transactions and prepare daily payout reports.
  • Analyze Canadian and US sales taxes related to e-commerce.
  • Process customer returns and refunds in online stores.
  • Prepare GL reconciliations for balance sheet accounts and assist in audits.

What is the Opportunity?

Reporting to the Manager, Systems and Financial Operations, the Intermediate Accountant is a generalist role responsible for supporting the team as directed by completing accounting processes, reconciliations, reporting and analysis on a monthly and yearly basis. Assignment of responsibilities within the department may include processing, reconciling and analyzing accounts receivables, revenue, inventories and costs for performing arts, e-commerce and any other tasks assigned.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform reconciliations monthly, GL accounts related to deferred revenue, box office and bar revenue, sponsorships/donations related to the Performance Arts Division (PAD) providing all supporting schedules, preparation of journal entries, and following up on clearing any outstanding items.
  • Verify and analyze the financial information from Spektrix (box office system) monthly to ensure accuracy of the data and upload into the financial system, Microsoft Business Central
  • Collaborates regularly with PAD to record invoices and supervises the completeness of billing done monthly.
  • Records and reconcile revenue, costs & expenses, A/P & A/R for all RCM performance arts events.
  • Reconcile transactions processed on all e-commerce platforms Shopify on daily, weekly, monthly basis, prepare daily reports for payouts and online sales.
  • Analyze US and Canadian sales taxes and understand the e-commerce challenges related to taxes.
  • Process and record transactions for customer returns and refunds through online stores and accounting system.
  • Records and reconciles the assigned Bank account transactions related to learning systems by the reporting scheduled due date.
  • Prepare reconciliations of GL accounts for various balance sheet accounts timeously and correct any material misstatements.
  • Participate in the preparation of annual budget, forecasting, costing analysis and any related ad-hoc reports related to performance arts, learning systems required by the management and other departments.
  • Assists in establishing the standard processes and reports, investigate issues to find solutions for better efficiency across the group.
  • Assesses current processes and procedures, identifies gaps, and recommends measures to ensure appropriate internal controls are in place and are adhered to.
  • Participates in interim and year-end audits. With direction from the direct supervisor, works with auditors in respect to providing required documents and schedules.
  • Works with other team members, participates in projects and helps in providing support cross departmental questions and queries without allowing items to slip through the cracks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

What We're Looking For
  • Post-Secondary education in either Accounting, Finance and or Business Administration, with a minimum of 2 years of full-cycle accounting/reporting experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Enrolled in recognized accounting program and actively pursuing designation.
  • Capable of handling large amounts of information and managing expectations.
  • Aptitude for analyzing data, identifying variances, accurate data entry and reconciliation skills.
  • Solid organizational skills, ability to work on different entities within the group with minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrated communication skills with internal and external contacts.
  • Attention to detail, high degree of initiative, ability to solve problems and improve processes.
  • Possess a solid understanding of computer-based financial and accounting systems.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and basic working knowledge of Word, Outlook and ERP System.
Salary Range
  • $60,000 - $62,000 per annu m
Additional Information
  • Hybrid work arrangement, requiring at least two (2) days on-site per week, inclusive of all staff Community Days.
  • General office environment with occasional requirements to work outside of regular business hours.
  • The work involved is subject to tight deadlines.
  • Sitting for extended periods with significant computer use.
