Job summary

Byrne Hollow Farm in Cortland, NY is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to improve uptime, operation, and efficiency of instrumentation, automation components, and networks across Byrne facilities.

You will diagnose problems with PLCs, SCADA, and drives, perform preventive maintenance, and contribute to capital projects while mentoring others and documenting changes.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of GED or High School Diploma is required.
  • Technical trade, military training or technical college strongly preferred.
  • Experience with PLCs, machine HMIs, SCADA systems, motor/servo drives, and process instrumentation is strongly preferred.
  • 2-4 years experience in industrial automation preferred.
  • Experience with HVAC, industrial refrigeration, boilers and other industrial utilities is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose problems and identify improvement opportunities using critical thinking and expert judgement.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain electrical control systems, electromechanical equipment, and instrumentation for machines and manufacturing processes.
  • Perform preventive maintenance including validation and calibration of instrumentation.
  • Develop and implement programming changes and validate/execute them as assigned.
  • Maintain and modify SCADA and other industrial software to improve operations.
  • Mentor and train employees as assigned.
  • Support change and configuration management lifecycle for equipment and processes.
  • Document changes and maintain organized repositories with configuration and maintenance records.
  • Track key performance metrics and report to leadership.
  • Propose actions to lower risk and increase value, leveraging available resources.

Job Overview

The Instrumentation & Controls Engineer plays a key role in executing assigned Engineering tasks. This includes improving and maintaining the uptime, operation, and overall efficiency of instrumentation, automation components, and integrated systems and networks at Byrne facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use critical thinking and expert judgement to diagnose problems and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain electrical control systems, electromechanical equipment, and related instrumentation and controls for machines and manufacturing processes.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks related to above, including but not limited to validation and/or calibration of instrumentation.
  • Identify and develop recommended and required logical and visual programming changes, **escalate** for validation and implementation. Perform implementation where assigned.
  • Maintain and modify SCADA and other industrial software systems to improve operations.
  • Mentor and train employees in duties and skills of this role as assigned or required.
  • Actively support the lifecycle of change and configuration management for equipment and processes.
  • Generate and maintain comprehensive documentation in well-organized repositories, including but not limited to proposed and approved changes, trial and production configurations, maintenance activities, performance/quality reporting, and related communications.
  • Track and regularly report on key performance metrics to leadership as assigned.
  • Develop and present potential actions/changes to lower risk, increase value/benefits, and/or leverage available resources to improve work cell performance.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with customers, external vendors, and within the organization.
  • Participate in the development of capital project planning and support strategic capital planning and execution processes.
  • Develop subject matter expertise within the industry for equipment, processes, and innovation to support strategic initiatives.
  • Partner with other departments to foster innovation, support product launches, improve operational performance and support the company’s strategic initiatives.
  • Responsible for leading a culture of continuous improvement in all areas while balancing quality, productivity, cost, safety, and morale to achieve positive results.

Min. Qualifications

  • Minimum of GED or High School Diploma is required.
  • Technical trade, military training or technical college strongly preferred.
  • Experience with PLCs, machine HMIs, SCADA systems, motor/servo drives, process instrumentation (proximity, temperature, level, conductivity, pressure) strongly preferred.
  • 2-4 years experience in industrial automation preferred.
  • Experience working in a food manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Experience with HVAC, industrial refrigeration, boilers, 3-phase electrical service, or other industrial utilities a plus.
