About the Position :
This is a temporary, full-time Initiatives & Opportunity support staff position. The role starts as soon as possible and runs for 2 years. It involves working 35 hours per week at an hourly rate of $30.00, reporting to the Research and Innovation Operations Manager.
The Instrumentation and Control Research Technician leads the instrumentation and control team and manages various research projects related to instrumentation and control, collaborating with research staff, students, industry partners, and the Applied Research and Innovation Office.
The position includes two main activity areas: a) Technical Duties and b) Administrative Duties.
Technical responsibilities encompass designing, installing, implementing, commissioning, maintaining, calibrating, operating, networking, analyzing, and troubleshooting instrumentation and electrical processes, measurement devices, and distributed control systems / PLCs for assigned research projects.
The incumbent also leads research projects, develops purchasing documents, and assists with research outreach in collaboration with the Research Lead and the Applied Research and Innovation Office.
Specific Accountabilities :
1. Technical Duties
a) Act as “Principal Investigator” and oversee the daily activities of research projects.
b) Develop research proposals, including project scope, size, and budget.
c) Conduct research activities such as literature reviews, data analysis, and experimentation in collaboration with researchers and industry partners in instrumentation and control.
d) Engineer various research projects concerning instrumentation, including design, implementation, installation, calibration, and documentation.
e) Design, install, and implement control systems such as advanced process control (APC), distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA).
f) Debug research control and instrumentation systems through node analysis, electronic diagnostic testing, port analysis, and communication testing.
g) Troubleshoot research projects related to instrumentation, electrical systems, communication, hardware, and software configuration.
h) Oversee the construction of control and instrumentation systems, including structural, mechanical, and instrumentation aspects for all projects.
i) Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
j) Maintain quality standards across projects.
k) Provide consultancy support to partners and industry representatives for new project development.
l) Assist in preparing technical reports and presentations for research partners.
m) Collaborate with the supervisor to design and develop work plans and timelines for project completion.
n) Attend meetings with research teams and industry partners to update on activities.
o) Support the research supervisor in coordinating research students' activities.
2. Administration Duties
a) Collaborate with the supervisor and the Applied Research and Innovation Office to prepare purchase orders.
b) Liaise with research partners, suppliers, contractors, and authorities for purchasing and related tasks.
c) Assist in project management within budget and time constraints.
d) Work with the supervisor to develop task lists for research students.
e) Support the Research Lead and Outreach Coordinator in preparing promotional content and managing distribution.
f) Assist with tours for potential partners, contributors, and guests.
Qualifications :
