Job summary

HOCS Projects Inc is seeking an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer/Technologist to support multi-disciplinary engineering projects in the energy sector. You will design I&C systems, prepare deliverables, specify instrumentation, coordinate with vendors, and support projects through FEED to commissioning.

The role involves collaborating with disciplines, ensuring safety and operability, and delivering compliant, practical I&C solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Instrumentation or Controls Engineering, or a recognised diploma in Instrumentation, Automation or Engineering Technology.
• P.Eng. registration with APEGA or C.E.T. designation with ASET is considered an asset.
• Approximately 5 to 9 years of progressive instrumentation and controls engineering or design experience.
• Experience preparing instrumentation datasheets, instrument indexes, I/O lists, control narratives and specifications.
• Working knowledge of field instrumentation, control valves, PLC/DCS/SCADA and industrial networks.
• Ability to interpret P&IDs, control-system drawings and vendor docs.
• Experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation or Hexagon tooling is an asset.
• Familiarity with IEC, ISA, EN standards and safety practices is a plus.
• Experience supporting multi-disciplinary projects through EPC lifecycle.
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepare I&C deliverables: instrument indexes, datasheets, specifications and I/O lists.

Role Overview

HOCS Projects is seeking an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer/Technologist to support the successful delivery of multi-disciplinary engineering projects across the energy sector. This role is responsible for instrumentation and control system design, technical deliverables, equipment specification, vendor coordination and project support throughout the project lifecycle. The successful candidate will collaborate with engineering disciplines, designers, vendors and project teams to deliver safe, practical and reliable I&C solutions aligned with project requirements, client expectations and applicable industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare I&C deliverables, including instrument indexes, datasheets, specifications, I/O lists, control narratives, cause-and-effect diagrams, loop diagrams and installation details.
• Select and specify field instrumentation, control valves, analysers, packaged-equipment interfaces and related control-system hardware.
• Support the design and configuration of PLC, DCS, HMI, SCADA and safety-instrumented system hardware and software, as applicable to project scope.
• Provide I&C input to P&IDs and coordinate interfaces with process, electrical, mechanical, piping and other engineering disciplines.
• Prepare material requisitions, support technical bid evaluations, review vendor documentation and resolve assigned technical queries.
• Assist with construction work packages, control-system architecture, network and cabinet documentation, and other project deliverables.
• Participate in P&ID, interdisciplinary, constructability and process-safety reviews, including HAZOP and SIL activities, as required.
• Support projects through concept development, FEED, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and start-up.
• Complete site visits, field verification, loop checks, commissioning support and troubleshooting, as required.
• Ensure assigned work complies with project requirements, client standards, applicable codes and regulations, and HOCS quality and safety practices.
• Complete accurate, well-documented deliverables within established schedules and communicate progress and technical issues to the project team.

Education, Professional Registration & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Instrumentation or Controls Engineering, or a recognised diploma in Instrumentation, Automation or Engineering Technology.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with APEGA, Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation with ASET, or eligibility for the applicable designation, is considered an asset.
• Approximately 5 to 9 years of progressive instrumentation and controls engineering or design experience in an industrial, energy, EPC or EPCM environment.
• Demonstrated experience preparing instrumentation datasheets, instrument indexes, I/O lists, control narratives, loop documentation and technical specifications.
• Working knowledge of field instrumentation, control valves, PLC/DCS/SCADA systems and industrial communication networks.
• Ability to interpret P&IDs, control-system architecture drawings, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams and vendor documentation.
• Experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation, Hexagon Smart Instrumentation or comparable engineering database tools is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of applicable IEC, ISA, EN and project-specific requirements; familiarity with functional-safety practices is considered an asset.
• Experience supporting multi-disciplinary projects through engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and common engineering review and document-management tools.
• Strong technical writing, communication, organisation, analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Strong English written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to complete occasional site or field work, as required.
• Legally entitled to work in Canada.
