Job summary

HOCS Projects, a Calgary-based engineering firm, seeks an Intermediate Project Engineer to coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering activities for oil and gas projects. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Applied Science.
  • Engineer-in-Training registration with APEGA or ability to obtain Professional Engineer within one year; P.Eng preferred.
  • Minimum four to five years of engineering and design experience in oil and gas or related sector.
  • Strong SAGD knowledge and ability to coordinate across disciplines.
  • Experience with procurement, design reviews, construction and commissioning.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and engineering collaboration systems.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate engineering and design activities across Process, Piping, Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Electrical and I&C.
  • Ensure scope and technical requirements are understood and executed across disciplines.
  • Prepare and review calculations, specifications, drawings and data sheets.
  • Manage design reviews, HAZOP/HAZID and constructability/operability studies.
  • Maintain project execution plans, manpower budgets and schedules.
  • Monitor progress, earned value, budgets and man-hours.
  • Coordinate procurement activities and vendor document reviews.
  • Communicate cost, schedule and resource impacts of changes.
  • Support field verification, construction, turnover and close-out activities.
  • Provide regular project status updates to leadership.

Role Overview

HOCS Projects is seeking an Intermediate Project Engineer to coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering activities for oil and gas projects. The role will drive technical alignment, manage engineering deliverables and support project execution in accordance with established schedule, budget, quality and technical requirements. The successful candidate will bring strong SAGD knowledge and be comfortable working closely with client personnel, project sites and engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate engineering and design activities across Process, Piping, Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Electrical and Instrumentation & Controls disciplines.
  • Ensure project scope and technical requirements are understood and effectively executed across participating disciplines.
  • Prepare, coordinate and review engineering calculations, studies, specifications, drawings, data sheets, reports and key project deliverables.
  • Coordinate design, 3D model, HAZOP, HAZID, constructability, operability and maintainability reviews and track actions to closure.
  • Prepare and maintain Project Execution Plans, Design Basis Memorandums, manpower budgets, deliverable lists and schedules.
  • Monitor engineering progress, earned value, budgets and man-hour allocations and support estimates and forecasts.
  • Maintain engineering control documents, project logs, action lists, risk registers and tracking tools.
  • Coordinate technical procurement activities, including requisitions, bid evaluations, vendor-document reviews and supplier interfaces.
  • Manage design changes, DCNs, PCNs, trends and scope changes and communicate cost, schedule and resource impacts.
  • Identify technical and execution issues and coordinate timely resolution with engineering teams, clients and project stakeholders.
  • Maintain regular interaction with project sites and client representatives to support field verification, construction and technical issue resolution.
  • Coordinate engineering support during construction, commissioning, start-up, turnover and project close-out, including RFIs, redlines and as-built records.
  • Prepare project status information and communicate progress, risks, challenges and recommendations to project leadership.
Education, Professional Registration & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Applied Science.
  • Engineer-in-Training registration with APEGA and ability to obtain Professional Engineer registration within one year; current P.Eng. registration is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum four to five years of engineering and design experience, ideally in oil and gas or a related industrial sector.
  • Strong working knowledge of SAGD systems, facilities and processes.
  • Experience coordinating engineering activities in a multi-disciplinary project environment.
  • Experience supporting engineering projects through planning, design, project controls, technical coordination and field execution.
  • Experience with technical procurement, vendor documents and multiple project phases, including construction, commissioning, turnover or close-out.
  • Brownfield, operating-facility, construction or other site-based project experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience participating in HAZOP, HAZID, constructability, operability or maintainability reviews is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with scheduling, cost-control, document-management and engineering collaboration systems.
  • Excellent communication, organization, analytical and problem-solving skills with a practical, site-focused approach.
  • Ability to meet client and site safety requirements and travel to project, fabrication and construction sites as required.
