Overview

As a Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE), you will play a key leadership role in advancing clinical practice and supporting professional development for nursing staff within the Labour, Delivery, and Postpartum areas at Sturgeon Community Hospital. The CNE plans, implements, and evaluates education, orientation, and competency programs that reflect current best practice and adult learning principles.

Working collaboratively with leadership, interdisciplinary teams, and other educators across the site, zone, and province, the CNE promotes safe, high‑quality, and evidence‑informed care for obstetrical patients and their families. This position also contributes to quality improvement, patient safety, and policy development within the maternal‑newborn program.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and deliver comprehensive orientation programs for new staff.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate continuing education initiatives to support staff competency and ongoing learning.
  • Provide clinical support, mentorship, and consultation at the point of care as required.
  • Provide direct patient care within the scope of practice when required, based on unit acuity and staffing needs, ensuring patient safety and continuity of care.
  • Participate in the development and review of policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines relevant to maternal‑newborn care.
  • Integrate evidence‑based practices and provincial initiatives into clinical education and unit operations.
  • Promote the use of clinical technology, documentation standards, and organizational protocols.
  • Serve as a resource for staff, physicians, and learners within the Obstetrical Program.

Required Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program.
  • Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS‑HCP).
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
  • Current Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS) certification.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of five (5) years of recent clinical experience in Labour and Delivery and Postpartum.
  • Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, leadership, and communication abilities.
  • Strong understanding of the nursing process, clinical judgment, and evidence‑informed practice.
  • Highly motivated, self‑directed, and flexible in meeting the learning needs of staff.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong computer literacy and working knowledge of Connect Care; Connect Care Superuser status preferred.
  • Commitment to quality improvement and patient safety.
  • Ability to assist with patient mobilization, turning, positioning, and transfer activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MOREOB Care Team experience.
  • NRP, FHS, H&S CPR Instructor certification.
  • Postgraduate studies or certification in adult education, instructional design, or simulation‑based learning.
  • Experience as an adult educator or instructor, including development, delivery, and evaluation of education materials and programs in classroom, clinical, and simulation settings.
  • Experience leading or participating in quality improvement initiatives or practice standard implementation.
