Job summary

Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development (OLCD) seeks an Instructional Designer to develop and refresh online and hyflex courses across program areas. You will work with instructors and SMEs to build course blueprints, outcomes and assessments, leveraging innovative multimedia activities and ethical pedagogy.

The role reports to the Program Director and involves collaborating on course design, schedules, and quality control to ensure OLCD standards while delivering

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in education, curriculum studies or related field with approximately three to five years related progressive experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
• Experience with educational technologies, including learning management systems, design software, video and audio software, and presentation software. Must have experience using Articulate 360.
• A strong understanding of the principles of adult education.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with a wide range of individuals.
• Strong attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize competing and shifting demands and organize complex tasks effectively.

Responsibilities

• Review the needs analysis and situation analysis conducted prior to the development of a new course to ensure there is adequate information for quality course development.
• Develop and follow a schedule and work plan for the development and build of each course.
• Work collaboratively with Instructors and SMEs to prepare course blueprints, outlines, learning outcomes, and assessments. Advise SMEs on inclusive pedagogical practices for diverse learners (cultural, linguistic, neurodiverse, and professional backgrounds).
• Develop complex learning activities with multi-media applications. Experiment with new course builds and activity ideas in a course sandbox. Maintain awareness of best practices and emerging technologies, and their ethical, pedagogical, and practical implications for course design. Designs and develops complex, interactive learning activities using multimedia authoring tools, including Articulate Storyline, Rise 360, and the Adobe Creative Suite.
• Complete quality control of courses to ensure they meet OLCD standards and to identify best practices, providing feedback as required, while completing course development and building work efficiently and cost effectively.

Job Summary

The Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development ( OLCD ) develops and delivers innovative and diverse lifelong learning experiences for more than 5000 students annually to help them navigate the changing world of learning and work. Reporting to the Program Director, the Instructional Designer will develop, refresh and build new courses and certificates for all program areas and subjects within OLCD , particularly courses for an online or hyflex (Hybrid & Flexible) delivery modality.

Key Responsibilities

• Review the needs analysis and situation analysis conducted prior to the development of a new course to ensure there is adequate information for quality course development. Complete ongoing refresh and maintenance of existing courses and certificates to ensure they remain current.
• Develop and follow a schedule and work plan for the development and build of each course.
• Work collaboratively with Instructors and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to prepare course blueprints, outlines, learning outcomes, and assessments. Advise SMEs on inclusive pedagogical practices for diverse learners (cultural, linguistic, neurodiverse, and professional backgrounds).
• Develop complex learning activities with multi-media applications. Experiment with new course builds and activity ideas in a course sandbox. Maintain awareness of best practices and emerging technologies, and their ethical, pedagogical, and practical implications for course design. Designs and develops complex, interactive learning activities using multimedia authoring tools, including Articulate Storyline, Rise 360, and the Adobe Creative Suite.
• Complete quality control of courses to ensure they meet OLCD standards and to identify best practices, providing feedback as required, while completing course development and building work efficiently and cost effectively.

Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
