Job summary

Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Health invites a Director of Research to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight to advance research priorities. You will guide developments across nine schools/centres and manage budgets while partnering with the Associate Dean Research and senior leaders.

You will identify funding opportunities, review applications, and advise on research strategy. A hybrid work arrangement within Nova Scotia is available and encouraged where appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with substantial leadership/administrative research experience.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian research funding/granting system, particularly health research.
  • Experience in budget management, financial oversight, and resource planning.
  • Experience leading and supervising staff, including performance management.
  • Excellent leadership, strategic planning, project management, communication, and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee implementation of the Faculty's strategic research priorities and build capacity across units.
  • Identify, initiate, manage, prioritize, and complete special projects aligned with strategic needs.
  • Pursue funding opportunities and review faculty research applications.
  • Provide strategic counsel to the Associate Dean Research and senior leaders; participate in Operations Executive.
  • Engage with external funders, other universities, and health/charitable organizations.
  • Oversee multiple research accounts and budgets, including budgeting and expenditures with compliance.

Job Summary

The Faculty of Health is Dalhousie University’s second-largest Faculty, comprised of nine Schools/College, multiple research centres and institutes, and key partnerships with the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry. Reporting to the Associate Dean Research, the Director of Research provides strategic leadership and operational oversight to advance the Faculty’s research priorities and achieve its strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the implementation of the Faculty’s strategic research priorities, building research capacity across all units in the Faculty.
  • In alignment with the strategic plan and research needs, responsible for the identification, initiation, management, prioritization and completion of special projects.
  • Work with faculty and identify appropriate funding opportunities and research initiatives. Reviews faculty research applications.
  • Provide strategic counsel to Associate Dean Research, and other senior leaders on research related issues and activities. Is a member of the Operations Executive that provides advice to the Dean.
  • Communicates and interacts with persons external to the Faculty of Health, such as Federal and Provincial government research funding agencies, other universities, and health and charitable organizations.
  • Manage and provide oversight for several research accounts and budgets, including budget preparation, budget management and authorization of expenditures. Ensures compliance with University, and granting agency operating guidelines.
Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree, plus considerable and relevant work experience in mid to senior professional administrative research positions (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Knowledge of the Canadian research funding and granting system, particularly as it relates to health research.
  • Experience in budget management, financial oversight, and resource planning.
  • Experience leading and supervising staff, including performance management and employee development.
  • Excellent leadership, strategic planning, project management, communication, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to drive innovation and achieve results.
Assets
  • Experience in a university health research environment.
  • PhD in any discipline.
