Job summary

Davie in Lévis, Canada, seeks an Inspector of Quality Control - Welding to oversee welding inspections on steel structures and piping during shipbuilding and repair projects. You will verify procedure compliance, weld qualification, and file inspection reports to ensure conformance with drawings, codes, and client specs within a demanding shipyard setting.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, technical diploma, or equivalent experience in welding, fabrication, mechanical technology, marine construction, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of steel structure welding and pipe welding inspection practices in shipbuilding, ship repair, heavy fabrication, pressure piping, offshore, or industrial construction.
  • CWB Welding Inspector certification, AWS CWI, CSWIP, or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with NDE methods such as VT, MT, PT, UT, or RT is considered an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, piping isometrics, weld symbols, specifications, and inspection test plans.
  • Working knowledge of common welding processes, including SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, and SAW.
  • Familiarity with welding defects, acceptance criteria, repair requirements, and quality documentation.
  • Knowledge of classification society regulations (Lloyds, ABS, etc.);
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software;
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to work in a fast-paced shipyard environment.
  • Successful completion of the security screening process and obtainment of the required security clearance under the Federal Government’s Contract Security Program (minimum of 5 years of residency in Canada, with no interruption of 6 consecutive months)

Responsibilities

  • Perform visual inspection of steel and pipe welds at fit-up, in-process, and final inspection.
  • Verify weld joint preparation, alignment, root opening, bevel angle, cleanliness, tack welds, and overall fit-up quality.
  • Confirm welding is performed in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications, WPS.
  • Verify that welders are properly qualified for the required process, material, position, and joint type.
  • Inspect structural steel welding on hull structures, decks, bulkheads, stiffeners, foundations, brackets, and supports.
  • Inspect pipe welding on spools, shipboard piping systems, socket welds, butt welds, branch connections, and pipe supports.
  • Review drawings, weld symbols, piping isometrics, inspection test plans.
  • Verify welding consumable control, material traceability, preheat, interpass temperature, and other welding requirements.
  • Complete inspection reports, checklists, weld maps, nonconformance reports, and objective quality evidence.
  • Support quality walkdowns, repair verification, system turnover, and final acceptance activities.
